The South remains philosophically the same as it did in the first part of the 19th century- Pro-States rights, anti reform. The element of slavery has been replaced by a subtle but definite racist undertone.

The nation is changing, and the 'New South' in the end remains pretty much the 'Old South'.

The left likes to think they hold a large majority of voters. Look at the county map here:
Map: Presidential Election Winners by County | Election 2008 | washingtonpost.com

Looking into detail Obama won most of the city and urban areas. No surprise.

I read somewhere that Obama only won by 6%

ROFL! Sarah Palin comes from the "south" only if you think Alaska is a tiny island off the coast of Texas. Which would not surprise me in the least. Nobody has ever accused liberals of being overly burdened with intelligence.

I agree with Glitch. Alaska is politically a center-right libertarian state that is culturally more akin to the Rocky Mountain States. The GOP is still big in the Rockies in such states as Idaho, Colorado (though it did go for Obama just this once) Montana, Wyoming,Arizona and espeically Utah.

One key thing to keep in mind, is many of the counties McCain won are quite small. Would you rather with 50 counties with a population of 25,000 or 10 with a population of 500,000?

Obama's margin was 7.27% which was fairly close to Bush's 88 margin over Dukakis.

Colorado has shifted quite a bit to the Democrats, in part due to heavy Dem trends in suburban Denver. Not only did Obama win Colorado, but both Senators are Democrats, 5 of the 7 members of Congress from Colorado are Democrats, the Governor is a Democrat, and the Dems have solid majorities in both the State Assembly and State Senate.

He never said Palin was from the south, but rather she was very popular in the south....

I didn't say Sarah Palin comes from the South. I was saying that people in the "SOUTH" were so enchanted with Palin. Doesn't speak well for the South, but it's true.

I guess some people who read posts on message boards are not "overly burdened" with enough intelligence to understand what was written.
