'Escalator down the hill'? It will be interesting to see how Americans handle being on a par with the rest of the world, instead of a privileged class.

You can always hope that the long term unemployed die from H1N1. That would save great amounts of money. And that would be a solution that most employed Americans could accept.

I think so. Even if we start to recover there are jobs that went offshore.
Those jobs will never come back. What's left is service, healthcare, education and government. What kind of economy can thrive off that ?

I wouldn't support "multi-generational" unemployment benefits. I just love these little right-wing fantasies some people have.

Until the economy improves, I don't see why unemployment benefits can't be extended. It's not like jobs are growing on trees.
Neither is money

When you've got unemployment rates as high as 12.2% in some parts of the country, it becomes quite obvious that there are NO jobs to be had.

These people have families to feed and lives to hold together, not to mention the fact that they are your fellow citizens. When their lives fall apart and they turn to less acceptable ways of trying to obtain resources, it becomes society's problem. At what point then does it then become your problem?

Start a business, move to areas where unemployment is low, do SOMETHING to pick yourself up. Jobs don't just appear out of thin air, people have to create them. Why not those who are unemployed? I know this sounds overly simply, but I think EVERYONE should have more than one backup plan. Have a business plan ready to go, get to know a few people who have the cash to invest (all of this just in case you lose your job). Have an application to more school ready to turn in so you can improve yourself and sustain your family during downtime. In short - be prepared.
