My question makes perfect sense as I have seen it and lived in six different states. The southeast still employs coal miners as there are no other jobs. These people vote Repub. They live in a trailer and had McCain signs during election time , a man with 13 houses and twelve cars, who doesnt give a dam-n about them.
You can employ circular reasoning all you want, I know better
Consider this; They know they are poor, but they also know a tax and spend even more leftest democrat will make them worst off than the repub. It's not that they are in love with the repubs, but they know the dems will make it even harder on them. Until a 3rd party raises up that actually cares, the repubs are just a cushion to the in their face damage done to them by the dems.
May not be what you or any other progressive wants to hear, but it's the truth. They do know both parties could care less about them,so it simply comes down to who will;
1) let me pray with my family,
2) not tax me as bad
3) will be more respectful of my beliefs
4) will respect my Constitutional right to keep and bear arms
5) which is closer to wanting to go back to the Constitution instead of the insane mess we have now (and the dems are so close to socialism and away from the Constitution, it's scary to them)
On those counts, and no,1 and 3 are not the same, the dems, with their judges that insist on violating the Constitution by making law from the bench, and insane nuts like pelosi in the democratic party will keep them voting republican.
None of this is to say they love the repubs either, as many think the repubs are too far left also. What the new england/northeast/sf bay left thinks as far right is not as far right as they want it. This is my observation of their opinions living in SC, and Georgia (not wacked out atlanta) and Florida in the past 2 years and visting relatives in Tennessee.
An overwhelming proportion of those below poverty line consistently voted Republican, if you drive through parts of the south, (particularly West NC,Kentucky, etc.) die-hard old school Democrats have been replaced with Republican supporters who live in trailers. They vote on only 2 isssues that I can see; guns and abortion, none of them seem to work,so I guess the economy isn't relevant to them?

Hell if I know. Why don't you ask them. I am in the Top 15% (which I still don't buy, but according to this, if you make more than 118$ as a family, you are in the Top 15%) and I am not christian, but I am Republican
To sum it up...these people don't have the critical thinking skills to understand what's really going on.
Padcrasher, They have the mental skills to see far better than the looney leftest! What you should be asking is why anyone is crazy/stupid enough to believe in the democratic party, the off the wall looney ideas that roll out of the crazies like pelosi, harry reid, obama, do I have to point out any more anti-American idiots in the democratic party ?
Ouch! Such anger in your post Isitmeorarethingsnuts . How about sitting back and thinking a little more about those who live in remote rural areas of the country that isn’t covered by the nonbiased media view, too many areas lean one way or the other politically and you simply don’t’ get both sides. While I’ve driven across a large areas of the nation I’ve listened to one sided media broadcasts because there was nothing else to listen to, even in larger populated cities the radio broadcasts were one sided. And no I don’t have XM or Sirius radio to enjoy “both” sides of broadcast radio.
Sorry that you may not be aware but there are many people living in large cities or remote areas of the country that can’t afford to spend money for luxuries for “balanced news media” on tv or radio satellite service or the internet (if it’s available).
Poverty limits information and news media to people. The original post of the tread is talking about “why do poor Christians vote republican?” Because poor people don’t have balanced news media information available. The media (radio & tv) leans publicity to the right. The right are anti abortion, pro-guns and this is the only source of information that they get. They are limited views to only their church, their bible, and their guns.
Thank you...I get that some are against abortion, and the above post from MN mentions he would vote Dem. if they came out against it...but.......I am wondering why some1 who makes 25k in a small business would still support the Bush tax cuts? It makes no sense. How is it control of a womans right to choose trumps putting food on the table for YOUR OWN KIDS?????........seems like brainwashed mentality.
They allow Republicans to convince them that every election is about god, guns, and gays. Welcome back to the culture wars. The religious right is certain that their lifestyle is the only one approved of by their deity and anyone not complying to their cookie-cutter culture is an enemy.
