Ten women have been found slain or have been declared missing in Rocky Mount, N.C., in recent years. But the rest of the country hasn't heard about a possible serial killer stalking the young women in this Southern town of 60,000. The latest victim, Elizabeth Jane Smallwood, was identified on Oct. 12. Why have the Rocky Mount homicides been largely ignored?

A woman in Blairsville, GA is missing--over a month, 2 months--from what I read and was shocked beyond belief--there may be a connection.
FWIW.
As for the media--I don't care for what they are doing on almost every issue facing society. Will that change--no. What can I do--sharpen my mind and live my values. 'No Excuse For Cruelty'/ever. Peter Gethers--'The Cat Who Went to Paris'.
The argument can be made that racism and apathy were contributing factors for subsequent murders. Imagine if two white women were killed at different times in an afluent suburb. As soon as a connection was discovered the FBI and the leading criminal profiliers would be deployed to work the cases around the clock. But here we have black women, poor and uneducated; and it took five of them to be killed before the law enforcement community even begins to make the connection.
Very interesting. Although I loath the Lefty Newsweek rag, I believe this has merit. I remember similar complaints about missing children a little while back. Missing children cases do not seem to get national attention if it is not a white child.
Hard to believe in this day and age.
I think a lot of it has to do with economic factors and resources of the victims (connections to "powerful" people, etc.) as opposed to outright, blatant racism. Either way... definitely wrong.
