Look, if unemployment is at 10% then that means the other 90% are employeed.
So we'll wait for Black Friday numbers ...that should give a good indication of real consumer spending.
I can be patient and wait for those numbers.
You see..Apple, Google, Yahoo all reported good earnings on increased revenue.
That means people are buying "stuff" and advertising that stuff. There's more going on in this economy that meets the eye.
If so many are holding back..why did Apple post 25% increase in revenue ?
iPod over a loaf of bread ? People have money and consumers won't hold back too long...shopping is ingrained in Americans. The itch to shop will become too much.
Some people will spend their last dime on crap ! I go into stores with a pocket full of money, and walk right back out, because it's just crap ! I went to buy some bedroom slippers at Kmart, and the toxic/vinyl fumes were so bad, and the artificial materials were shabby. Dreadfully sleazey. I will shell out for some mail order slippers that might last more than a year.

Yahoo did not report an increase on revenues, their revenues are down over 20% from last year this quarter. (revenues are compared year to year, not month to month in the stock market).
Their profits were indeed up, their revenues though were down, way way way down..
And btw, you do know that Google and Yahoo make money from non-tangable selling right? They sell advertising on a website and their sales would not have a rippling effect like increased home sales, or car sales etc which would provide other industries increased revenues..
Apple though a very good choice to point out but indeed an exception to the current economy.

You are correct on the Yahoo..I stand corrected.
Apple changed their accounting methods this quarter (see a few posts back for link) which boosted their revenue by about 25%.
LB, if they're anything like me, they will be hunkered down for a while. I pretty much stopped all unnecessary spending late last year. Same with driving. I used to drive up and down the Randall corridor shopping at my leisure, for the house, for the kids, etc, etc. Haven't done that in a while and don't plan to, even though I could if I wanted to.
With the massive taxes coming down the pike, we will continue to NOT spend.
Why in the world would I want to enable obama's disastrous fiscal plans for the country?
You crack me up! You should seriously consider working in advertising/PR (if you don't already) I never agree with you. EVER. But you have one hell of a way of putting things.
Re the OP - That is strange. In my area stores are preparing for a slow holiday season and my city is not one of the hardest hit in the U.S. In Las Vegas, City Center is already offering discount room rates and other perks to try attract customers for the grand opening. It opens in December 2009. We are staying for free on New Year's Eve and two days after at one of the MGM group Hotel/Casinos. We have never been offered a free stay for New Year's Eve. Businesses seems to be bending over backwards to attract customers.

Well that's good news. Should be a good Christmas shopping season for retailers then.
I think it'll be awesome!
Well, it depends how much change one can scrape together.
But....there's always Wal-Mart..........always.
Socks are known to be a hot item every year.
And everyone can use toilet paper.
Yep....
I can't wait to go Christmas shopping this year.
I know what I'm getting.

Pajamas are an even hotter item but they can be pricey.
