Aren't libertarians "fiscally conservative" and "socially liberal"? They have been around for a while and have NO shot whatsoever. Mainly because the common American tyrant loves freedom for themselves, but hates freedom for others.

Like business -- if a third party became big enough and presented a viable candidate, that candidate and his top people would be subsumed by one or the other of the big parties; plus they'd both morph to incorporate whatever was valuable about the third party.

Yup....If viable independent parties were available the two sides of the same coin might just have to actually do what their voters wanted...

I would like to see a real choice other than the two Parties we have today. The only way it would work is if it started at the local levels and grew so that there was a good representaion in both houses.

Agreed. Look what the liberal media and Fox News did to Ron Paul. They both gave him no media coverage and when they did, they made attempts to denegrate him.

I think it will happen, but not in 5 to 10 years, more like 25 to 50.

There are actually regulations on the books that make it difficult to create a third party, based on how they raise money. So I doubt it for a while.

I just read an article where they said that they are pushing Sarah Palin to be 3rd party candidate. That's what I meant by the "R"s trying to hijack the 3rd party after their own party fell apart. There is no way in the world I would ever support a 3rd party with morons like Palin representing them.

I think as more people start to realize that neither Democrats or Republicans have their best interests in mind a serious third party might have a chance.

However, I'd guess that if the 3rd party was more in touch with "normal" people they'd get a large following pretty quickly.
