My wife and I go to a Chinese restaurant in our area. We noticed the name tag on our Chinese waiter one night said Truman. We couldn't figure out how he could have gotten such an English sounding name so we asked him. He told us he changed it for the benefit of his American customers.
If I moved to another country, I would go by whatever my name translated to in the native language.
One could easily make the argument that these Mexicans are not really respecting their adopted homeland or their very accomodating hosts/employers.
You didn't get it. The difference is in being asked/forced to change name, versus someone choosing to. I've a few Chinese and Indian friends who have adopted an alias (or changed names). It was THEIR choice. It was Bobby Jindal's choice to not go by his birth name (Piyush Jindal).
What if your employer asks you to change your name, however, to something they see fit? Would you be perfectly fine?

In none of my posts did I advocate forcing these people to change their names .
And I disagree that - especially in this case - that it's 'good business'. Don't know about you, but when I travel through New Mexico, I expect to hear Spanish accents and Spanish itself being spoken. I expect the people I meet, be it a hotel desk clerk, the waitress at the diner or the pump jockey at the local gas station to have either a Latino or Native American name. If I'm going to a hotel in New Mexico, I'm going to immerse myself in the New Mexico culture, not to have everyone around me looking and sounding exactly like me.
And thank you for the insult. How did you insult me, you ask? Your remarks about 'those who stay in roadside motels' are insulting - especially to one who has stayed in many of them.
People like to have their comfort zones when they travel. Just because someone is going to New Mexico, it doesn't mean they don't want to stay in a place that is comfortable to them. They don't mind experiencing a different culture during the day but people like to come back to a place that feels homely to them. A lot of people are xenophobic. I've seen motels openly advertise "American owned" to belittle the Indian owned motels because there are racist people who don't like dealing with a foreign owner with an accent and a difficult-to-pronounce name. That is just the reality. There are a lot of people on this forum like that but would never admit it. These owners wouldn't engage in these activities if this didn't exist but they are doing it to appeal to their customers. The reality is a lot of these people who stay at these cheap road site motels and hotels are WT. It is completely racist though and no one should be forced to change their name to appeal to a racist crowd or an owner but it is good business strategy.
I think this issue reflects well on the White vs White Trash culture. White Trash don't see this as racist but Whites would. In White Trash culture, this isn't seen as racist.

Thanks again.
It is posts like yours that help to destroy ANY shred of reason.
Do you EVER think your own bigotry might make your posts look a little...suspect?

I agree this owner is racist. I also think you killed your point with your own stereotypes.
I'm Jewish on one side and Irish on the other. Both of my great-grandparents absolutely refused to change their last names to Smith or Jones when they arrived to the United States. They went through hell for this. To ask anyone to change any part of their name for any reason related to business shows nothing but ignorance towards basic American history. Anyone that would be so stupid is obviously not a good businessman.

It's totally OK to call people White Trash though, funny how that works...
