For instance,if only the tourism industry is enhanced,then the regime will have more revenues to pay an army of ruffians & "activists" / collaborators...
If there is a penetration of American products in the inland,more poor people will benefit from those paricular trade activities...
As long as Cuba is involved with ALBA - I would not support lifting the embargo against Cuba. They have a choice - do they want a good relationship with the USA, Canada and Europe OR do they want to continue with the the "revolution" in Central/South America.
ALBA is basically anti-American/pro Dictatorship ... why should we agree to their ideology?
My thoughts are lift the embargo so I may vacation there, period. Just kidding, sort of. Seriously though, there is no reason for us to continue this, it's silly and a moot point. Like another poster stated, we trade with many communist countries and deal with crappy dictators, so what's the big deal?
The embargo should have been lifted 20 years ago when the Berlin Wall was torn down. If the purpose of the embargo was to destabilize a communist government, it has failed miserably. Now, it seems that supporting it is just a way to grab votes from Florida.

Could you be more specific, please, regarding what you mean when you say that the regime would enhance its position by keeping all the revenues?
I would think that if there were a big influx of tourists from the U.S. as well as trade with U.S. businesses, it would be totally impossible to keep some of the "revenues" from reaching the people.
Do you think Raul will be as heavy-handed as Fidel was? Seems that so far he has not.
Raul has been in Fidel's shadow since they returned to Cuba on the Granma and took to the mountains in South Cuba. Raul ran the Cuban military and was Fidel's second in command. He knows he doesn't have the panache and showmanship of Fidel and is both a bureaucrat and a cautiuos man. He has traveled to Africa and Latin America and knows Cuba needs to develop and suceed like Vietnam or China. He is also only a few years younger than his brother and may not last much longer than Fidel. Then Cuba falls into the hands of the next generation who doesn't know what it was like in 1957. I don't know if Raul will get to leave a mark on Cuba.
