FLORIDA: They call them "water bugs", but they are really giant, flying cockroaches. If you go dig a hole in your backyard, you won't find any stones. If you buy a new puppy and leave him out at night, you'll need to buy another new puppy. You can drive to the grocery store and get hit with $3 in tolls. You can retire there, and the first morning you go out for breakfast at IHOP, your waitress will be older than you are. Two words: Fire ants.

There is a legitimate reason older folks like Florida and it has everything to do with health at an older age. Sag, I'm surprised at your blatant ageist comments. That and the cockroaches.

NYC boring?

The only people I know who left NY for NC sadly couldn't afford to live here any longer.

Temperature -- the only place I would consider in NC is Asheville; the average low temps are close to those of NYC.

My sibling is in FL. She is able to have a life down there which she couldn't afford in NY. Many of her friends are up here, and she has stated on many occasions that she wishes she could afford to move back.

No two ways about it -- it can be hard in NY.
