Clearly EGO is a HUGE reason - probably the biggest reason - and yes I agree 100% with this statement by Marmac:

"( and I say it about the ones I voted for and didn't vote for, the great Presidents and the not so great Presidents )".

Personally I think that (to certain degree at least) there is something intrinsically wrong with giving power to ANYONE who actually WANTS it.

Sadly however, there is no alternative.

I would never want to be president. Not only do you have a grueling schedule, people hating you but you also have the constant worry of assasination. Ugh, no thanks. I would be a senator though.

Once they leave office their memoirs, books, and the lucrative lecture circuit, are extremely profitable. The average Ex-Prez nets more in a single quarter than in an entire term in office. It's a very good career move. Even those that lost make a mint.

I personally wouldn't want the job but the payoff at the end of the ride would be quite attractive.
