Why bother to take the census if you can't distinguish how many people living here are US citizens and how many are not? The "are not" part does not necessarily mean you are here illegally. It just means when numbers of "American Citizens" are needed for everything from benefits to representatives and everything in between, you know how many citizens there are. If we don't ask the question, how do you base any decisions down the road on it? Do you know how much government and private industry "stuff" is based on population?
Why not just count: American Citizen - Not An American Citizen. And if you answer "Not an American Citizen" that's the end of the questions for you.
