The original question raised was; "Why, in 2009, are there still librarians?" I would suggest that the answer is simply that there are still librarians in 2009 because there are still people who value reading, value education, value the opportunity to do substansive research with the assistance of those trained to provide it, and who still believe that having such opportunity free for all citizens makes this country better able to live up to its promise.

Mrs. NBP, an elementary school librarian, and NBP Oldest Daughter, a public library employee who assists people with research, both figure he's "Creepy Stalker Guy" who hits on all the librarians and they have to figure out polite ways to shut him down.

The library still needs people to shelve and reshelve books and that sort of thing. Not sure it needs a master's for that.

I've seen a libarian sit there surfing the net.

What is needed is just a centralized station called "Library Information Desk" and they help people who need help. Not sure you need a master's for that.

There's waste all over the place!

Librarians also have to maintain a book collection. that is a high priority . getting rid of books, circulating books, which of the thousand of books written each year should be in the collection. that's a big part of library science. I can help my self in any library as long as the collection is good. Some libraries have poor collections , the children's department may not have "where the Wild things are" or the caldecott winners. a small town library could have 80,000 books to offer the public which sounds like a lot, but out of several million books, which ones do they decide the public needs access too? that alone is a full time job that requires some education.

Now with computer labs in all the public libraries, they have to be vigilant about weirdos who visit the library every day with out any intention of reading a book, and don't get me started about homeless people who hang out in libraries. so if a librarian seems a little preoccupied maybe its one of the other 400-1000 people a day that they are having a problem with.

I read it.

Libraries and librarians provide a useful service, which is more than I can say for most entertainers and athletes...at a fraction of the cost.

As to digitalizing everything...lol...anyone who has to rely on computers to work knows exactly how all hell breaks loose when the system crashes. Sucktastic thing to happen right before your term paper is due.

What part of "everyone who works in a library is not an MLS did you miss?"

Ya' know, I work in a high pressured environment. The people who work for me, if they ever reach the bottom of the pile for a few minutes are more than welcome to check their email or look at the internet. They're employees with breaks; they are not slaves.

Yeah, I dont know why you need a degree to be a "rocket scientist." I saw them in that Tom Hanks movie. Dozens of em, just sitting there looking at monitors. Not sure it needs a masters for that.

What do we need libraries for, anyway? They're just a place for homeless liberals to look up porn on the internet.

There are still librarians in 2009 because there are still people who love reading, believe in education, need help locating materials, and want the opportunity to research various topics with the help of a librarian. I am amazed at how efficient and courteous our librarians are when often dealing with a less than pleasant public. I'll take a hard-working librarian over an over-payed, self-indulgent athlete or celebrity any day.

I love going to my small town library. The smell of it, the feel of it, the nice people who work there, the well tended inside and outside (beautifully landscaped), make it an enjoyable experience. The librarians not just sitting around, they seem to keep busy helping people, always helpful toward my queries and requests.

Growing up in small-town Texas, also loved the little libraries. Would walk a long distance to get there (no car in those days), and spend most of a Saturday many times in the library, checked out too many books (had to haul them all that way back home!). But so worth it. Books were thought to be of great educational value back then, and do remember parents and teachers reinforcing that to us. So it is indeed sad to see the ignorance on here and the lack of value placed on this institution.

I agree that a master's isn't needed for a lot of positions.
I work in a library and yes I surf the internet. We surf the net because a lot of times we're slow and believe it or not, it's against the rules to read books (where I work). It's a stupid rule but I still read. I figure I'm being more productive reading a book than being on Facebook like my co-worker who was on the computer most of yesterday while I did a lot of the shelving, straightening up, making sure our books were in order, etc.
