I feel sad about the entire situation. What makes it worse is to know that many Americans have such a vitriolic desire for revenge and believe that "an eye for an eye" is the foundation for a good and peaceful society.
Then think of it as a learning opportunity for the Major. For the rest of his life he can think about all the harm he did in this world and try to make amends for his deeds. Maybe it will reduce HIS vitriol towards innocent people. There was NO need for his actions. If he didn't want to go to war he should have shot himself not innocent people.
BTW,its not quite "an eye for an eye". His victims are no longer breathing; their families have lost them forever; he just needs some mechanical assistance to breathe, and his family can visit him if they want.
She is a Killeen Police officer. She and he partner were directing traffic just outside the base when the shooting started. They were on scene in three minutes...!~

You're assuming that this was a rational act on his part. Do we know that to be a fact?

Now come on, AUM, I was just getting to like you from the library thread. Revenge gets a bad rap; it is really nothing more than an impulse toward justice.

In my opinion, a rational society doesn't make decisions based on vengeful emotions.

What would you rather do..rehabilitate the guy to be a good citizen ?
After what he did ?
Wake up..there are people who "have problems" in society.
After what he did and to whom he did it, he deserves punishment for his crime and he did commit a crime against American soldiers who were preparing to go to war FOR US.

It depends on your definition of rehabilitate. I don't think the decision comes down to, "Either we set him free or we torture him for the rest of his life."

Correct, and that means they need help. Torturing them isn't going to solve anything, and that's what I was responding to.

Damn! She is goooooood!
I'm surprised, though, that she got in past security.

Which was irrational.....his mental state or his religious beliefs?
