I can't believe what i'm reading. Transsexuals are neurologicaly intersex, it is not a 'cosmetic procedure' but a matter of life and death. The suicide rate amongst untreated transsexuals is around 50%. Imagine if you woke up tomorrow as the opposite sex, yet still were the same person mentaly as you are now. Do you think that would be something you could easily live with? Besides, the incidence of transsexualism is so low that it adds little to the overall cost of health expenditure. Usualy the only option for trans people (particuarly male to females) to raise the money for transition is prostitution. I think this opposition to trans issues is most likely an extension of right wing homophobia.

It's much more than that. Most people are very uneducated about issues facing people who feel like they were born into the "wrong" sex.
With that said, I do wonder if there wouldn't be a need for sex change operations if we didn't have the gender identity rules and boundaries that we all have to live with.

Thats true, ignorance does seem widely prevalent. Maybe a good way to frame it would be explaining it in terms of intersex, as I can't see intersex people being denied necessary surgeries.
Regarding the social construct of gender binary, I don't think it makes that much difference to an individuals gender identification, or requirements for surgery when a society openly embraces 'third/middle sex' concepts. In fact it may even increase the incidence of transsexualism. Thailand is the obvious case in point, where the percentage of transsexuals is far higher than in the west.

I am not a homophobe but I this procedure is not medical necessary in other words they will not die of natural causes if they don't have it. What if I felt I should have been born with bigger boobs and my self esteem is low and I am depressed so badly that I want to kill myself should my insurance pay for it? No sorry they should not and this should not be paid for either.

Would you deny coverage to intersex people? Or cosmetic work for burns victims? People born with birth defects? Gender dysphoria is somewhat more serious than a regular person wanting say bigger boobs, or a different nose.
For ford's sake, everyone knows you go to Thailand for sex-reassignment surgery.
They're the best in the world and cheaper than the US.
Heck, I go to Thailand for dental work.
I've actually heard that a lot of people are now flying to Thailand, having whatever medical tretment needed done and fly back to the U.S. And all much cheaper than if they stay here and have it done.
Isn't Thailand one of the few places that has no government control over the medical profession? That must be why it's so much cheaper.
The doctors all go to U.S. medical schools also.
