I'm against forcing people to buy health insurance, but not against having them held personally accountable for choosing not to.
If a person opts out of buying health insurance, he/she should be allowed and expected to pay for medical services out of pocket, even for ER visits. And they should be deemed ineligible for pre-existing condition coverage over the period they opted not to be covered.
Well yeah, at least one good thing that would come out of it, for California anyway, would be that 15 billion $$'s or so could immediately be lopped off the state's deficit that pays for illegals who just mosey through the doors of their local ER whenever their kids get the sniffles.
so if i go to jail for not buying healthcare i would then have it for free. now i get it
If I had no health insurance and were near destitute, yes I might consider not paying to get sent to prison so I could get a roof, a bunk, three squares and health care. I'm a near-senior, though, so I don't have to worry about bending over in the shower to pick up a bar of soap.

As a believer in "Keep It Simple Stupid", I would treat illegal immigration as a whole separate issue. Anything else would be a diversionary tactic, to ensue chaos and hope efforts are lost... and corporate interests win (again).
Young people get sick and are injured frequently. It's not realistic to think that they are impervious simply because they are young. Anyone going without health insurance at any age is either unfortunate or plain stupid. But it's difficult to talk common sense to the crowd who thinks riding a motorcycle without a helmet is sensible.
Frankly, I don't want the cost of all their ER visits passed on to me. If they can pay, they should be required to do so.
Now, now! Don't try to make sense on the issue. It's extremely confusing to them.

Well, prison is part of the business models that has been adopted in this country over last 25 years or so. You would make a lot of people happy (besides your room mates )
Tort reform would fix almost nothing. Why dont you check out the profit margins of almost every industry related to health care. There you will find the problem, which is medical profiteers at every level of the chain, not sue happy patients.
Tort reform would fix almost everything...! The average doctor who has never has a suit filed against him, pays $200,000. a year in insurance, before they even open the door. Once that amout is lowered by 80%, and the defencive tests are eliminated, going to the doctor will cost pocket change..
We'll just add in your suggestions, and the world will be beautiful...!
My company recently closed, leaving me unemployed, and uninsured, but even I can see the UHC is a very bad deal. The system needs to be fixed, not destroyed and turned into a socialist program. If this plan ever passes, we are doomed as a nation...
The system is easily fixed, but those in charge refuse to cut off the hand that feeds them to fix it correctly.
A president with principals would introduce tort reform and make insurance competitive across state lines. BO has no principals. He won't fix the problem at the cost of the money flow into his pockets...

I thought I would take you up on checking out the profit margins of some health insurance companies and drug companies, Cigna 3.2%, Aetna 3.87%, United Health 4.2%, Cardinal Health 1.16%. Tort reform would drop costs alot but we know who the lawyers are in bed with.
Funny how the media makes the insurance companies the bad boys, just like the oil companies. Check out there profit margin, not to much. Turn off the TV and research this stuff yourself, this healthcare bill that came out of the house is a bad bill, big time. Will break our nation.
I am not a Democrat or Republican so I don't take sides, I just look at reality and yes we need healthcare reform but not healthcare through our government. They are the worst buisness people, I would be if I had an unlimited supply of money. The private sector is the only way to possibly make it affordable.
