It's kind of funny how this debate rages on (tonyandclaire seems to have adopted it as a pet issue, yet doesn't seem to understand the difference between local weather patterns and global temperature trends).

In most professional circles that deal with actually managing land, the shifting plant and animal habitats due to climate change have long been accepted as fact because they are happening before their eyes.

And, to be clear, those shifts are due to expanded warm belts that are moving species into locations they have never been before and shifting weather patterns that require entirely different management strategies. Nothing to do with politics.

I hope this doesn't mean that people living in the 'warm belts" are going to move to Montana.

This could have a devastating impact on the Montana brainscape.

um .. isn't Phoenix already there (Missoula/Bitteroot Valley)? Along with half of California, Oregon, and Washington?

The whole US93 corridor from Eureka down to Sula has been hammered by transplants over the past 20 or so years.

I keep hearing people tell this same tired old joke. Heard it all this abnormally cold summer, and through this past October. I've heard it at LEAST 20 times. "The coldness is a result of Hell having frozen over because we have a (fill in the blank) in the White House".

The planet's temperature curve rose sharply for almost 30 years, as global temperatures increased by an average of 0.7 degrees Celsius (1.25 degrees Fahrenheit) from the 1970s to the late 1990s. "At present, however, the warming is taking a break," confirms meteorologist Mojib Latif of the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences in the northern German city of Kiel. Latif, one of Germany's best-known climatologists, says that the temperature curve has reached a plateau. "There can be no argument about that," he says. "We have to face that fact."

But the Mount Pinatubo eruption happened too long ago to be related to the current slowdown in global warming. So what is behind this more recent phenomenon?
