I know what a patriot is. Do you define "extremist" as someone who just doesn't trust government to "do the right thing" by we-the-people? If so, I guess they are both "patriots" AND "extremists".

To me, a patriot will use legal challenges to try and change the laws they don't agree with---use the democratic process that has worked for centuries in this country. Extremists plan/train for the day when they might want to take over the government with force and fire power with no regard for the innocent people who will get hurt in the process.

In that case, I would say they are just patriots since I saw no evidence that they were planning to take over the government by force.

why not put all those skills & willingness to fight, shoot & kill somebody to good use & join the marines

The military doesn't recruit people whose talent is fighting. Otherwise they would sign up gang members, those in bar room brawls and maximum security prisons. The military needs people with other skills as well.
