If the law threatens your life, then you don't obey it.
If I'm the victim of a gunshot, it will be by my OWN hand, when I'm old and decrepit, not someone else's hand. It will be my CHOICE to do the honorable thing.

As always, right there with totally accurate predictions of what the passage of time will bring. You could, as easily, walk into your corner store, on your way to wherever, a half hour from now, and be dead from a bullet fired from some meth heads illegal weapon, just because he needed a fix and you could not shoot back, or first. Some folks, including myself, prefer to have the option of meeting such a threat with return or pre-emptive fire. It matters not a whit , to me, if I am killed by surprise, without having fired a shot, if I , at least, was able to do so if given the chance. Peronally, I would rather have the means to shoot back, than not, even if I lose the exchange, at least I would go down with some semblance of a fight. When faced with the chance or by the actual occurance, of an attack by a goblin with a firearm, it dos not take a whole lot of ponderance to realize that having a gun, in a gunfight, is highly desireable, if one wishes to come out alive. In the end, ain't none of us getting out of this life alive, however, having a bit more say so as to WHEN we depart seems more ...ammenable.
Reality check:
If every gun owner were a seasoned combat vet and actually practiced enough to be very familiar with their weapon then I would agree that everyone who owns a gun and carries it is safer because of it.
I know people who keep a fully loaded clip in their weapon 24/7 and never ever practice, never clean their weapon. That weapon will fail them when they need it most. Assume for a moment that they then have the nerve to draw said weapon. They are not familiar with it. They attempt to fire it.
Damn the safety was on. They look for the safety to disengage it. They find it. Disengage and attempt to fire it. Damn didn't have a round in the chamber. They try to pull the slide back but its hard. About then the intruders bullet plows through their chest and the intruder gains a new weapon.
Sound funny? I have seen hunters who actually practice with their rifle forget to disengage a safety when they have all the time in the world to set up for the shot.
I am a gun owner and have a concealed carry permit. I fire anywhere from 200 to 600 rounds a month. I feel confident that this combat vet will have it together if ever put in that position. I just don't believe that the majority of gun owners are competent enough to make the same claim.
I have read stories of trained police officers spraying anything and everything except the perp, emptying their Glocks and never hit the bad guy standing 20 feet away.
I support the 2nd amendment and believe in the right to bear arms. Even for idiots who never practice. I just don't believe that most will be able to do the job when they are caught by surprise and afraid for their lives.
The Officers in this particular situation may have become complacent. Yes that is speculative but a fair speculation on my behalf. As to whether the woman was armed could be by her choice perhaps not any gun regulation at all. So to be fair I do not perceive this is a gun control issue. Presumably though a gun may have saved her from this tragic fate. It does sound like it was a domestic dispute and as such she may have elected to make her home gun free to minimize any ease of violent action by her domestic partner.
Now On the issue of guns and their relation to personal security ABSOLUTELY! I own three handguns a shotgun and a rifle with intent on a another rifle in the future. I nearly always carry anywhere the law allows me to do so. (No Schools, Federal Buildings, Courts, Posted No Carry Businesses etc) I carefully obey all the laws as I interpret them and vote and write my disputes to legislation that restrict gun rights. Yes, even I, a Democrat, lean conservative on this issue. For in a world with domestic violence, gang, terror acts, poor economies driving crime and road rage we all must do what we have to do to for self preservation the ultimate instinct.
Let the second amendment hold firm in the future of this nation.
At least, that's what a lot of anti-gun-rights people will tell you while making the argument that "Nobody needs a gun", or "Nobody need such-and-such kind of gun", etc.
I'd like to see them explain that to the woman in this story.
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Investigators were trying to determine Thursday how a man got into a woman's apartment and killed her while police stood watch outside, Los Angeles police said.

How silly.
I'm neither a victim nor a gun owner.
I don't see the need for it.
Never have. "The sky is falling" approach to being a spoiled brat.
Get better friends, live in a better area.
I'm glad that when I live in the states I hang out with intelligent, educated people who really don't needs guns to go to the theater r foreign flicks, breakfasts or the library/museums.
The police aren't able to protect everyone. Having one gun in your accessibility will not hurt.
