No, nobody forced them, and I certainly didn't buy. I was thinking... "By the old rule of 3x your annual income, how will I ever get enough of a salary to buy a house?"
I felt totally dumb not getting in on the run up...
But those that did dive into the run up had lots of high level advice saying, "go ahead". Heck even Greenspan told folks to try and get in on it, if I recall correctly.
Geez, if nothing else there was an argument that read, "Better buy now or you may *never* be able to catch up and own a home".
Bottom line is, whether you were a speculator, or just wanted a home, there was apparent incentive to get in the market.
And the gate keepers... the head of banking, finance, big business, lobbyist, et. al. either didn't see the end game coming, or didn't care and let it happen, you pick.
The average person was just trying to make heads or tails of it and live a good life.
Sure folks took out home equity credit lines, etc. They did the same thing that led to the Great Depression in a way, they spent on paper gains before they were realized... with the blessings of the lenders no less. (The supposed finance pros...)
So I don't know how you can blame average people, who for a while felt like they were getting the American Dream for once. (Which is really to be rich and possibly famous if you get right down to it. To live like a celebrity, LOL! We were all raised on that idea.)
The blame should be placed where it squarely belongs. On our alleged leaders, who are supposed to lead on our behalf as a sacred trust passed to them by the people...
So whatdya think, did they abuse and profit absurdly from the trust or what? LOL!
Trying to blame the little guy is like trying to blame a rape victim for getting raped. It's to shift the blame from the perpetrator to the victim.
Despite anyone's philosophy along the line of "***** happens" or "you get what you deserve"... is that *really* right?
I mean, did this girl that got beat a raped up in Richmond, Ca. *deserve* it? By the same token, did working class America (and everyone else, considering the economic waves that resulted) *deserve* this end?
Get serious.
Geezus, I didn't partake of any of it, and still got hit with a layoff and loss of personal saving (severe loss) in the hunt for the decent job... I had nothing to do with any of it, and am still paying the price.
