There needs to be one flag in this country, not 2.

Mexican flags are waved at just about every immigration rally, and the media asserts they are just excercising their "rights". A guy waves a Confederate flag and the FBI is called because it might be a hate crime.
Touche! (And two thumbs up.) Good point.

Half a million AMERICANS died fighting those traitors. It's the same as flying a Swastika in Germany
First off they are not traitors, secession (at the time) was not treason, not ever once stated in the Constitution before the 13, 14, and 15th ammendments therefore there was nothing AGAINST it.
Second off, the Confederacy and Nazi Germany are completely polar opposite entities. The Swastika I will say again, was adopted by a madman who wanted to conquer the world, clense it of Jews, and have everyone fitted into his ideal view of genetic purity. The Confederacy wanted to be another country and be at peace (originally) with the North, nothing else until the actual shooting started.
When someone flies a swastika, you know there is something wrong with them, the Confederate flag is much more varied in meaning because very many people behind it are NOT racist.

It was Treason and they were Traitors.
Half my family died putting down their treason
No more Mr Nice Guy, they should never have been given amnesty.
This will clear up the motivation questions. An exerpt from the story.
"The real story of the day was the students, faculty, staff and alumni who gathered peacefully and read the University's creed in unison repeatedly a few hundred feet from where the Klan had gathered. Organized by One Mississippi, a student group working towards greater social integration at Ole Miss, protesters wore shirts that said "TURN YOUR BACK ON HATE... (I live by the UM Creed)" and stickers with one simple word: "Unity." Before and after the rally, they talked to fans in town for the game about their message and plan to make their way through the 10-acre, park-like Grove, passing out copies of the UM creed to fans.
Today, the members of the real Ole Miss family were not afraid to show their faces. They were not afraid of the Klansmen. They stood with their backs to them. They stood together to say with one voice that Ole Miss "believe(s) in respect for the dignity of each person." They stood as the leaders of a new Mississippi, a Mississippi that her citizens and a nation can be proud of."
Thanks for the link...although the quoted part was a personal editorial, not a news-story.
In any event, I think it is great that some students came out to challenge the Klan. The latter "rally" doesn't make anybody very proud...
But then again, could it be that some of the student protesters are also motivated by a desire to get rid of all reminders of Southern heritage?
The bottom line is, was it a protest against "cone-head" presence (understandable and admirable) alone? Or, also, -- in tandem -- to support the university decision to eliminate "To Dixie with Love"? If so, in which case, I think (for what it's worth), they are blindly wrong.
I just don't understand why there is a problem with the song "To Dixie With Love"? That blend seems to be as much "unity" as anything (that is, Dixie along with the Battle Hymn of the Republic). And again, the chant "The South Will Rise Again?" So what? Can't the South be proud of being the South?
It would be interesting to take a poll from the post-ers on this thread and match up liberals, conservatives and independents with their feelings about the Confederate flag.
Honestly I have shared my opinion of the southern flag with many mississippians when I lived in Biloxi. My take is that the Confederacy was an enemy of the USA. Therefore to me it's like waving a banner that represents Al Quada(sp), just my take. The south has a rich history and much to be proud of but the Civil War isn't one of those.

Bring it on then, No More Mr. Nice Guy. Half MY family died resisting an invasion of their homeland. It is people like you who keep the bitterness alive....
The treason charge? Been refuted (by the powers that be in the North, no less) a hundred times. You opinion on it (treason) is fine. But do you suppose you know something they didn't (in deciding it would be a fool's errand to charge them with treason?).
