first of all, in answer to this post:

The rest who do not enlist for these reasons do so for adventure. And yes, they may have family and are definitely taking unnecessary risks this way. And this would categorize them in the same way as this dead caver.
you are missing a huge chunk of people that do it because they want to, because they feel driven to do it, whether for patriotic, religious, or other reasons. adventure and poverty are not even remotely close to being the total list of motivations that people have in order to join the military.

next, who is the idiot, here?

a) the guy that enjoys a sport that can be dangerous.

b) or the guy that can't fathom the difference between "this is stupid because it is proven to be stupid," and "this is stupid because i don't like it."

i ask, because this seems to be the category that both hawkeye and chatty fall in to.

Here in Oregon, every single winter, there is at least one news story of some dopes who climb mountains and get themselves lost and killed. A lot of money is wasted in rescue attempts that usually fail anyway. So you can climb a mountain and get yourself killed -- what's the point? Is that what life is all about?

Pretty stupid.

I guess they should win the Darwin awards.
chatty even admits it, though she probably doesn't realize that she did. "i don't identify," says it all. i don't get it, therefore it is stupid.

as chango already stated, the nutty putty caves aren't even technically challenging. thousands of people have gone through it every year without problem.

statistically, being in a moving vehicle is more dangerous than just about any adrenaline sport, spelunking, cliff jumping, and parachuting included. so, shouldn't responsible people––especially parents that want to be alive to see their kids graduate high school––play it safe by staying out of cars, trucks, vans, and buses?

i mean, according to you guys, this man was an "idiot" for taking a risk, so i would assume that none of you drive.
