Its a well known fact that Christianity, in its Catholic form, was established to contain a growing movement in the Roman Empire, and to make the people happy, so it was to control the population.
Its one of the reasons the founding fathers established a seperation of church and state. You can't have freedom of religion, and still have the state controlled by one religion.

I really don't think it's as simple as all that... It's also surely not the case that religion and governance have been synonymous throughout history; the strength of the relationship between the two has varied across time and across cultures. Certainly, there are civilizations in which religion and government were closely related and interdependent, but they were not one and the same except, perhaps, for a few instances.
As for the reason for the creation and evolution of the various religions, since many predate written history it's really speculative. I would wager, and I'm guessing that there's quite a bit of literature in anthropology that would lend support to this, that religions initially arose as a means of explaining the unexplainable. Think about it; ancient societies didn't have modern science, they didn't have the scientific method and most didn't have any formal system of logical reasoning mapped out. The world was big, scary, complex and utterly confusing. Religion provided comfort and seemingly reasonable explanations... as time went on, institutions arose around religion and with those institutions came power and vested interest. And the rest is history.
I think you are confusing the belief in something more powerful than ourselves with organized religion and all its laws
I believe that the "roots" of religion were the attempts of early man to control an unpredictable enviornment and to grant "blessings" (good hunting, healthy children, etc.) At some point however, religion did become a method of controling large populations. . . . not the original root, but a related evil.
The only problem with your line of reasoning is Bible prophesy some 2500 years old being fulfilled at the correct time in our recent history (May 14, 1948). It's easy enough to speculate that accounts of prophesy that apply to events in ancient history could have been recorded after the fact. The rebirth of the modern state of Israel defies this explanation and leaves only three possibilities. The first is that the ancient Jews were able to guess some two and a half thousand years into the future when Israel would be reestablished. The second is that Britain, Russia and the US timed the end of WWII to coincide with the required time of Israel's rebirth, or third, God actually does exist and He is in fact the God of the Bible.
Well unfortunately they have been called on the carpet for much of the usual vulgarity, insults, and filth/foul language that in the past characterized many of their posts down in that section and they are not able to publish their religious views there anymore the way they see fit. Hence you should expect a whole lot more of these types of hate threads to surface here and in the Great debates section. Just a heads up.
As far as the Poll, it appears to be slanted for only one option one way or another. But traditionally in the past, religion and politics have been in bed together, so no getting around that. But I think that is about to change soon with secularist religion gaining control and ridding other religious global competition once and for all. That is why Atheistic Evangelism is so on the rise.
