If the Taliban announced they'd leave Afghanistan in 2011, wouldn't we regard that as victory for our side? (middle east, Christmas)

So far nobody wants to address the real question. Pretty telling, isn't it? Even leftists are embarrassed over our announcement of when we will be leaving, and can't bear to even discuss it.
Lots of discussion, you're not offering anything that relates to the real world.
"Really weak"? You bin watch'n the news the past month or 6? You got some catch'n up to do.
In 2001, Al-Qaeda only numbered 300 members. Most have since been killed.Only a few remain in Afghansitan. What im trying to say is Al-Qaeda is an international threat they dont regroup in one place, they're every where.
am i the only one who thinks it is an incredibly bad idea to be ramping up aggression in afghanistan at the same time we are threatening iran with trade sanctions or worse?
Al Qaeda screwed the Taliban over and brought misery to the Afghans. That's why Al-Qaeda is really weak today because no one supports them as for the Taliban they're almost impossible to defeat.
Al-Qaeda and Taliban are two different groups, you people have to understand that.
I understand fully. The operative word is "safe haven." Before we can get to that safe haven, which happens to overlap into Pakistan, we have to first push through the Taliban.
If the Taliban announced they'd leave Afghanistan in 2011, wouldn't we regard that as victory for our side?
Yes but they won't.
Obama should have pulled out on day one of his presidency. This is a war we can not win not because we lack the military strength but the "courage" to win.
I am glad we do not have the "courage".
By courage you would have to do a Halagu Khan which was last done in 751 years ago in 1258 when Halagu sacked Baghdad and nearly made Islam extinct.
Quote:
Hulagu's brother Mongke had been installed as Great Khan in 1251. In 1255, Mongke charged his brother Hulagu with leading a massive Mongol army to conquer or destroy the remaining Muslim states in southwestern Asia. Hulagu's campaign sought the subjugation of the Lurs, a people of southern Iran; the destruction of the Hashshashin sect; the submission or destruction of the Abbasid caliphate based in Baghdad; the submission or destruction of the Ayyubid states in Syria, based in Damascus; and finally, the submission or destruction of the Bahri Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt.[4] Mongke ordered Hulagu to treat kindly those who submitted, and utterly destroy those who did not. Hulagu vigorously carried out the latter part of these instructions.
Hulagu marched out with perhaps the largest Mongol army ever assembled – by order of Mongke, two in ten fighting men in the entire empire were gathered for Hulagu's army.[5] He easily destroyed the Lurs, and his reputation so frightened the Assassins (also known as the Hashshashin) that they surrendered their impregnable fortress of Alamut to him without a fight.
"Utterly destroy" meant kill everyone except Christians (Hluagu's wife was a Christian) which is what happened to Baghdad from which Baghdad never recovered.
The last time western civilization did a Hulagu was with Japan and Germany in WW2.
To avoid Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan the trick is to just stay out. Unless you are willing to utterly destroy you can't win on foreign soil. It would be as if the Soviet Union somehow managed to occupy American soil. Pity the poor Russian soldier, he would never win and could never rest as long as he was here.
Horrible mistakes were made that could easily have been avoided.
We stupidly got involved in middle east politics falling prey to the Muslim saying "The enemy of my enemy is my friend". Afghanistan started it followed by Kuwait. We should have traded for oil and let them kill each other off is so inclined.
I am not crazy, George Washington would have agreed with me. Google "Washington Farewell Address". Read his warning about foreign entanglements.
Never allow Muslims into the country. They could build their own universities and go to their own schools "over there" which is better than here. If Muslims weren't here 9/11 would never have happened.
And here we go, with Obama we continue to make the same mistakes.
I understand fully. The operative word is "safe haven." Before we can get to that safe haven, which happens to overlap into Pakistan, we have to first push through the Taliban.
Al Qaeda is an international group, they basically operate around the world, they don't really regroup in one place. So basically today in Afghanistan and Pakistan al qaeda dont have any influence because no one likes them.
Obama should have pulled out on day one of his presidency. This is a war we can not win not because we lack the military strength but the "courage" to win.
I am glad we do not have the "courage".
Well, finally an actual answer to the question, without a change in subject until the second word. And it only took sixteen posts to get it. Hats off to nicet4!
Now, next question:
If we would regard an announcement of unconditional withdrawl by the enemy, as victory for our side, is there any reason we should not regard an announcement of unconditional withdrawl by us, as victory by the enemy?
Al Qaeda are now operating in countries like Somalia, Yemen, Bangladesh, etc. They're pretty much spread around the world and if the U.S. only focuses on Afghanistan and Iraq, then terrorist attacks are going to happen more often.
They don't have to leave - they only need to SAY they're leaving.
We don't have to SAY we're leaving - we only need to leave.
Looks like a good plan to me.
