I share your frustration that the Democrats still haven't cleaned up the GOP's horrible mess. But I'm afraid the brutal truth is that it's going to take some time to repair the damage.
Aren't you the least bit curious why the "hospital associations, AARP and other powerful interest groups that usually howl over Medicare cuts have also switched sides" leaving the GOP so all alone?
Well, as AARP is concerned Medicare is a competition to its medical plan. If Medicare disappears AARP stands to gain quite a bit of the market share.
excuse me. but I love how you guys keep saying that the republican controlled the congress...sure they had a majotity,,but by only a few members
the dem 'minority' in the senate was never a near the minority the repubs have
under clinton:
105th congress (3 jan 1995- 3 jan 1997) : senate 53- 47
105th congress (3 jan 1997- 3 jan 1999) : senate 55-45
106th congress (3 jan 1999-3 jan 2001) : senate 54r-46d...house 221-211
uinder bush:
107th congress( 3 Jan 2001- 22 Nov 2002) : senate 50-50
108th congress ( 7 jan 2003- 9 dec 2004): senate 51r-48d-1i
109th congress (4 Jan 2005- 8 dec 2006): senate 55r-44d-1i
110th congress (4 jan 2007- 3 jan 2009: senate 49-49-2
111th congress (6 jan 2009- current): senate 58d-2 id- 40r
when its CLOSE the minority can block/and get things ,,,but the dems CURRENTLY have a SUPERMAJORITY
Republicans usually walk in lockstep with the party, while Democrats tend to vote independently on many issues. (NAFTA for one example). Of course they can be just as stubborn (and unrepresentative of their constituents) as their brothers cross the aisle on some issues.
Then why are AARP's seniors plans all tied to Medicare?
From your link...
Age 65+ Insurance Products
Choose from an array of quality Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Medicare Prescription Drug insurance plans specially designed for Medicare-eligible persons.
Neither AARP nor its affiliate is the insurer. AARP contracts with insurers to make coverage available to AARP members.

Insurers and providers pay a fee to AARP and its affiliate for use of the AARP trademark and other services. Amounts paid are used for the general purposes of AARP and its members.
Did you not read the whole thing? You aren't arguing that they wouldn't profit by a diminishing Medicare program are you?

And what would happen if Medicare was diminished? Are you okay? You seem to be off your game.

Couple that with:

And you should be able to see why AARP would be very happy if Medicare, the FED program, disappeared all together.
Here's a conspiracy theory to contemplate:
By now we're all familiar with Saul Alinsky and his ideas about overloading the welfare system in order to collapse capitalism.
Was all of what we're facing today foreseen back when Fannie, Freddy, et.al. were handing out all of these junk mortgages?
Add to that ever-rising unemployment rates leading to repossessed automobiles.
The number of people added to the welfare rolls has sky-rocketed.
Now we are wanting to add billions and trillions to healthcare and government-funded jobs (stimulus) piled on top of TARP and misc. bailouts.
Is there a grand scheme to equalize Americans to a level somewhere just below middle-class?
Because it's starting to look like that unless you keep 2 jobs, or both spouses are working, (and that's no sure-fire solution)it's inevitable that you're going to have to rely on some sort of social program to keep your head above water.
I didn't intend to have another healthcare debate.
There a wide assortment of social programs to choose from.
We're paying for food, shelter, child support, cell phones, electric, and on and on and on and on.....
How many more of these programs do you think we can keep, with so many more being added to the rolls daily, without jacking up taxes beyond reach?
