Legislation to allow same-sex marriage in New Jersey cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee tonight after more than seven hours of emotional debate and testimony, setting the stage for a showdown in the full Senate.
Cheers erupted in the packed hearing room when the committee approved the bill 7 to 6.

They can contact their representatives and let them know. Not everything has to be up for a public vote. It's cheaper that way.  |

The NJ public is divided. Some polls say more favor, while others say oppose. It depends on the poll and timing. I have to guess it is roughly evenly divided.

What in the world could matter less? It's a civil rights issue. Majority has nothing to do with it. (Except that a bunch of bigots have prevented marriage equality up until now.) |

Yes, the majority does have the say, not some committee made of a few members. |

And that's why it will be voted on by the full Senate, who will then have to deal with their constituents' reactions.

The majority should not have the say on things like this. Not in the least. If the majority believed in slavery, should we enslave them?
If the majority believed woman deserve no rights (to work out side, vote, etc etc), then should it go through?
The majority should have no say on things about other peoples lives including who they love and want to share their benefits with.
I can totally sympathize with the conservatives on the abortion issue even though I am proudly pro choice but I fail to see how anyone can have an issue with gay marriage. I really do. I usually can see both side of the argument (Death penalty, abortion, illegal immigration, etc etc) but not for gay marriage. |
