I think all government transactions should be required be conducted in English. One of the best and fastest ways for people to become assimilated into the US is to learn the language.
I think it should be dual Spanish/English. Should be required for all kids to take Spanish in school and become fluent in both languages. Being a Westerner, Spanish is a major part of my cultural heritage.
I live in the NYC area and there are about 5 or 6 languages that are a major part of peoples cultural heritage, shall we make learning them mandatory?
Should English be the Official language of the United States? Meaning that ALL immigrants would need to learn the language upon entering this country. No dual signage, driver’s license tests, voting and all other government documents would be in English only...etc etc
Yes or No and why?
I thought English was already the official language voted on in 1789 when drafting the constitution? Didn't English win by 1 vote over the french or german language, or something to that effect?
when did that "liberal political correctness" start to enforce evil bilingual policies? As far as I remember, there were tons of villages in the Midwest where a high percentage of the population spoke German solely until WWI begun and you didn't want to be heard speaking the language of the enemy.
America has always been the land of diversity, having dozens of languages spoken could only be positive
I think that is an urban myth. Immigrant pockets speaking their native tongue? Sure. Entire villages (or towns as we in the midwest like to call them ) that only spoke German? Or any other language into the 20th century? No. How would they communicate with the county seat? How about the governor? How did the school children pass the mandatory tests to pass out of 8th and 12th grades? If you think people today are 'xenophobic' I assure you that the people 100+ years ago were even moreso.
The California constitution originally required all officiall documents to be printed in both languages, which they were, for 30 years. Much government business in New Mexico has always been conducted in Spanish. Bilinguilism is probably more relevant out West than in other parts of the country. It's probably something best left to the states to decide.
Why don't Canadians have their patties wadded up over this issue?
They don't. I believe it's the law that all public communications must be done in French and English. It does take twice as long to explain things there.
