Oh, it'll NO DOUBT be worse than average - it will be a LOT worse than average - we are after all barely emerged from the worst recession in decades, and have yet to see any job creation (that will come next year) so it'll be very low numbers no matter what.

I DO think it will be an improvement from last year (even though the unemployment rate is greater now than last year at this time).

Next year will be better yet though.

I agree. We are just emerging from the recession, so many consumers are still cautious about their spending. The momentum is at least trending in a positive direction, as consumer confidence is slowly returning.

I agree... by this time next year, spending figures are likely to be much improved.

You mean November.

Retails sales were down in December. I seem to remember you saying something about waiting to see what the numbers would be.

Now we know. People continue to cut back.

Did you listen to Rush on Tuesday? I had an interesting conversation with him about spending and participating in the economy.

NO - they were UP from December of the PREVIOUS YEAR (as I said they would be).

It was down from NOVEMBER of last year, but UP year over year - and by a pretty good percentage (more than I expected).

"Compared with December 2008, sales were up 5.4%. Excluding autos, December sales were up 5.2% from a year earlier."

Retail sales drop 0.3% on widespread declines - MarketWatch

Sales were down from NOVEMBER but up from last December.
Also note that the reason sales were down from Novermber was due to the fact that the November sales were revised UPWARD from their original numbers published last month.

Yes, and computer shipments were up 24% in 4th quarter and expected to keep rising. Companies are begining to replace their computers. Another good sign.
