Actually I think kev had a valid point.. It has to be raised, is there an alternative? Without the increase, there might not even be enough money to send out the SS checks etc that many rely upon..

Actually I would support an Amendment to the United States Constitution that would say "The United States Government Shall Maintain a Balanced Budget Every Fiscal Year. An Exception For a National Emergency May Be Made With A Vote Of 4/5ths of the Congress and 75 Senators"
That is what I would like to see. Then people would think twice about starting billion dollar wars that they have to pay for now.

You have to work in the United States 40 quarters (10 years) to draw even minimum benefits from Social Security. This law was put in a few decades ago because people (mainly Russian and Chinese) would bring their elders over here and put them on Social Security. Now they have to take care of them. I am not sure if they can get Medicare but most of them are poor enough to get Medicaid.
We have already burst thru that ceiling - they just aren't telling.
