My issue with the donation to a charity in someone's name is, who is really getting the warm fuzzy from that, the giver or the receiver? I donate a lot to charity, but to give the money in someone else's name seems weird. I think you should at least find out what the recipient's favority charities are before doing that.

great response. I have always wondered about this giving to a charity in someones name. In memory of, at death is different, but as a gift, I am not sure.

I would rather get and give a gift any time of the year, for no special reason, other than I thought the person would like it, than HAVE to give at this one time of the year with all the pressure to pick something out have it there by the 25th.

I never feel that way. Yes, giving thoughout the year is fine, we call that, in our family, simply an I LOVE YOU gift. It can be something small we see in a catalog or something we pick up on a trip, but the holidays are different and I am never feeling I do this cause I have to, that is why we draw names.
