Micki Grossman has been volunteering on Mitzvah Day for 20 years, but Christmas 2009 is special. This Dec. 25, Jews and Muslims join helping hands so Christians can have the day off to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
In year's past only the Jewish community assisted in the mega effort that provides more than 800 volunteers for 48 Detroit area social service agencies at 74 sites on Christmas Day.
Mitzvah Day is presented by the Jewish Community Relations Council and Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. The Council of Islamic Organizations coordinated Muslim volunteers. All are asked to bring non-perishable food items when reporting to the Jimmy Prentis Morris Jewish Community Center in Oak Park. After a brief orientation, teams will leave for projects that run from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“The common interpretation of Mitzvah is it's a good deed,” said Grossman, of Farmington Hills.
My father, a Jew, specifically asked that he work on Christmas Day so that somebody who actually celebrated the holiday could spend time with his/her family. He's been doing as long as I can remember.
It's called Mitzvah Day and anyone can do a Mitzvah! I've been doing the same on Christmas and Easter. Before you call someone a dork you should look in the mirror!

Then your dad's a cool guy.
I used to work at a newspaper in New York, which as you can imagine was staffed by Christians, Jews, Muslims, atheists and everything in between. You could always get your preferred holiday off, because there'd always be someone of a different religion who was happy to work on those days.
