takes guts to be a soldier or a cop, they got it.
you know i have noticed the names of the soldiers now-- its lopez, rodriguez and gomez. used to be smith, jones and johnson. did our courage go south?
On the caontrary, I was a professional soldier and also served as a Police Officer, I never felt the need to wrap myself in the flag in order to convince myslef to do my job

[quote=SoEdible;12261351] It may not be completely foreign-created, but there are people that would love to destroy this country and/or put us under their way of life. To me, that threatens my freedom.

You aren't aware of how much on target you really are. As long as Washington can keep the American people preoccupied with Iraq and Afghanistan, our way of life is going to change, we will be taxed into the socialist caste system where current individuals on capitol hill would like to see this country progress. I am not totally convinced that terrorism is the biggest threat to the USA. Just look at whats going on in D.C.

Saddam hated radical Islam, he never supported Al Queda , other than lip service to suit his own ends, in the big pic, Iran IS the bigger threat, or its leadership is, the people there are surprsingly pro western, and want to normalize realtions. The end result here is that our leadership is , and has been, a bunch of bludering, inept , fools, who are getting our people killed with their stupididty. Before sending our troops into harms way, a solid, and workable, plan needs to be in place, and goals defined. Afghanistan started out this way, and is now a quagmire. Its a never ending cycle, it seems.
have you noticed how yemen keeps coming up in articles now?

Our "interests" are being taken over by special interest groups who keep their lobbyists extremely well-paid to convince politicians that their client's interests are in fact the country's interests.

Special interest groups tore Rome apart after rotting away its foundations. Empires don't fall to external threats or invasions; they crumble from within.

What special interest groups are you talking about? The NRA? The VFW? The American Legion? The Disabled American Veteran's? Those ARE special interest groups, you know? Don't think so? Read their charters.

Or...are you just talking about those "other" special interest groups. You know? The ones you don't agree with?

I don't know the people bought it...

And they supposedly voted in the jerk who looked underneath a table and desk for WMD, if you believe that. All in all, pathetic. When he did that he basically spit on every soldier's grave.

Furthermore, it's been decades since we really fought for our freedom. I think WWII might have been the last time that we truly fought for our freedom.
And before WWII i can only think of two other wars, the Revolution (American) and the war of 1812.

I guess it's just a feel good sentiment. Am I way off base? What say you?
You fight and sometimes die because you signed up to do just that if the Federal Government says you are to do it. If you are against fighting, killing or even dieing than the military is not the place for you. If you are against a war the government sends you to you always have the option to file for CO status. I fought because it was my duty and I signed up for it, it is why most do, a sense of duty to the Nation and personal honor.

Perceptive--our next opponent in the Long War, sufficiently small that we can kick around, but not so large that it reveals the weaknesses of our overstretched military. Somebody we can target with cruise missiles and drones to provide media fodder so we can continue our violently irrational activities, and so sufficiently removed from Western sources that we'll never hear any narrative other than our own guvm'ts.

I'm glad that I could get the viewpoint of someone who served. Don't think I'm knocking our soldiers but I think the troops are victims of propaganda. I say this because they're because we are actually invading the Middle East and dying for control of that black gold. I really feel that the Middle Easterners are small fish...It's a little stupid that our Military is abroad fighting for freedom but steps are being taken domestically to get rid of freedom by our GOV'T (Patriot Act and those new driver's license with RFID). Call me crazy but I have a bad feeling about things. I have cousin who served and the guy is very eccentric and I'm very worried about another cousin who's in Japan. To get back on topic, I feel that,in the mind of the troops, they're fighting for freedom but the government sees them as disposable.
