There is a very interesting article from the UK press that outlines very clearly how the newest airport scanners - the ones that reveal a near-naked image of a person - would NOT detect the bomb used by the Christmas Day 'underwear bomber'.

These devices are not effective against liquids, plastics and powders...

I thought they could detect these materials - but the experts say NO...

So - given that we have no technology in place or on the drawing board to detect the latest explosive devices that Islamic terrorists are planning to use - what are we to do?

Is it time yet to consider Profiling or Behavioral Observation to pull people from airport security lines for closer examination based on their background, profile or behaviorial cues???

Or should we just accept many hundreds or thousands dead in the name of political correctness and civil liberty???

Are planned airport scanners just a scam? - Home News, UK - The Independent

The only thing profiling will accomplish is have the screeners let down their guard when a passenger doesn't 'look' the part of a terrorist, BAD MOVE!

the above highlighted and blame the Republicans.
Because obama does not like profiling well, against blacks anyways.

El Al has had a near perfect record of catching terrorists with their profiling technique - so to say that profiling won't work is to be unrealistic.

It has a valid place in a layered approach - and it is time the public started to consider using it - and stop the politically-correct knee-jerk cowardly response refusing anything that might insult someone.

I think that bomb sniffing dogs are an excellent tool - and they should be used - but then people would be put-off by dogs coming up to them and sniffing around and civil liberty groups would probably fight them tooth and nail...

Look up El Al's volume vs. total US volume, the chances of a 'non-profile' tytpe slipping thru are exponentially greater in the US.

Body scanners detects certain threats. Walk through explosives sniffers (already at many airports) detect other types of threats.

There are even portable sniffers:
Quantum Sniffer QS-H150â„¢ Portable Explosives Detector
Quantum Sniffer QS-H150™ Portable Explosives Detector $35,000

probably so but so strange that dispite the avalanche of soft targets in america, and lousy internal security (unlike france) the crazies still target airplanes.
