My brother in his teens hung with bad crowds, got into some very bad drugs and was really a problem child. He hit my mother one day and my grandfather came over and beat him within an inch of his life (literally) while explaining to him what respect and honoring your parents means.
My grandfather didn't stop there though, he required him to work for him and my brother had to be to work every morning at 5AM and worked till 6PM the entire summer break.
My brother did a complete 180 after that. He stopped hanging with his bad friends, stopped using drugs, etc...
He always was fond of my grandfather and having the living crap beat out of him by someone he admired was a major wake up call.
