If she stays out of policy matters then she ought to be off limits. If she insinuates herself in to the realm of public policy, makes statements supporting the President's agenda or offers opinions of her own then she's fair game for criticism vis a vis her position on the issues upon which she becomes involved.

Meanwhile, the President announced she was finally going to take the First Man on a big date to NYC. "He's really excited," she said as she stepped on Air Force One to meet world leaders in France to discuss nuclear disarmament. "I told him to pick out a nice restaurant." It is rumored that the First Man actually spent the day figuring out how he was going to spin this as Presidential domestic experience when he looks for a political job after Hillary Clinton's term is up.
I feel one role for the First lady is to help her husband for his POLITICAL SRUVIVAL. The causes that a first lady promotes, for The President's Agenda. I think one position is how the First lady promotes herself, and how that relates to the Presiden's agenda whetehr it be a policy role or not. I think that most First Ladies do an awful lot of listening, to identify and focus the Needs of importance to Americans, If Policy is brought up, her role will be to bring this information back to the President. And so much more on the agenda for First Ladies, besides always looking there best. Not a easy job.
It would be nice if the First Lady took up some noteworthy causes. The Iron Chef doesn't fall into that realm.
