...if they can't be open about who they are? Why should they care about serving the country if they are discriminated against both in the military and in the country they serve?

Why not? It is strange that in our country it is UNLAWFUL to discriminate against a person's sexuality but this law doesn't apply to the military? That is some weird line of logic..

gosh I am sick of this
they serve because they want to just like everyone else that joins the military
we do not have a draft any longer
and by them serving, they should be able to be open
if the president or the military has a problem, they should get over it
they are as much heros as anyone else

I don't understand this response.

He means that it is odd that for example, employers are unable to discriminate based on sexuality and gender, but yet that the military is more than able and willing.

It is an odd dichotomy.

As for myself, I wouldn't serve in a military system and I'm heterosexual.

If they are fine serving in the closet, who am I to say otherwise?

Of course I would rather gays be allowed to serve openly but that's a totally different thread.

Sure. They should have all the same opportunities and responsibilities as everyone else. Believe it or not, fighting for your country doesn't mean fighting just to protect the right wing bigots. Considering we're fighting against people who kill people who don't fit their religious dogma, I'd think motivation to serve now would be pretty high.

It's like women in the military. It takes time and persistence. Nothing happens overnight.

Of course they should serve if they want to and it is wrong to discharge them for simply being gay. Other nations including Israel have gays in their militaries and they aren't falling apart. Besides most gays in such conditions don't go around flaunting their sexuality.
