Actually they do already. The problem is that the SSA and Immigration are completely separate entities. While sponsors must prove their financial ability to support family members, there is no entity that in reality actually enforces it. Once they are here, they can take advantage of the SS rules.

Fine, and now how extensive is the problem?

Understanding Supplemental Security Income (SSI)-- SSI Eligibility

Prucol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Definition of PRUCOL:
"Permanent Residence Under Color of Law (PRUCOL) is not recognized as an immigration status by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS); this category was created by the courts and is a public benefits eligibility category. For a person to be residing "under color of law," the USCIS must know of the person’s presence in the U.S., and must provide the person with written assurance that enforcement of deportation is not planned."

Oh, goodness what a horrible idea!

A little history, the ugly reality is that Social Security as originally proposed was welfare for the elderly, not a retirement plan. Social Security just seemed like a nicer way of saying it. As for SSi, well it is kind of hard for the disabled to pay into the system when the by definition, disabled implies the inability to work.

So what do you suggest should happen to folks who have never been able to work due to a medical or physical problem - strike that, I really don't want to know.

Now we are getting at the gist of the problem.

Unless of course you are trying to pay for special education for a disable child so that their disability can be somewhat mitigated so that they aren't a total financial burden on their family or society.

PS - please don't tell me that you are one of those right to life folks.

What is unbelievable is that you haven't stormed into the local Social Security office and filled out an affidavit swearing that all these people you know are cheating the system!

I'm getting the distinct feeling that If every person who writes about someone they personally know who is cheating the government out of money were reported to the appropriate authorities we would have enough to pay for social security and a hefty down payment on the national debt.
You are wrong, It is not welfare for the elderly, these people paid into it and are entitled to get their money back! Did the 4 yr old pay into it, NO and there are other programs available to help disabled kid's. I have no problem what so ever giving SS disability to people who are "truly disabled and have paid into it to some extent. In fact I know some. My point is, SS was originally set up ONLY to be used as a retirement plan and politicians have spread the money around a little to far. Why not set up other govt programs for the disabled who didn't pay into SS. So, according to you it would be okay for the govt to dip into your 401 K or IRA or what ever you have set up for your personal retirement plan, to pay for disabled and maybe even fill a couple of potholes with it. The money I paid into it is MINE and I resent any representative of the gov't laying their hands on it for use other than its original intent. So, answer my question, can I have some of your personal retirement money when SS runs out??? Huh? huh? huh?

I'm not sure I would classify it as a problem considering most Asian immigrant families work their butts off and pay their taxes but there are more than a few immigrant seniors who've never worked in the US drawing benefits. Since my experience is only with Chinese immigrants, it's my only frame of reference and I really have no idea how widespread the practice may be.

Ok guys. I have an idea. I wanna write a letter to congress about this or my senator.

Does anyone know where exactly I should sent this letter too? IS there a specialized department?

Thanks in advance!

Actually SS was originally the Widows and Orphans fund. It was not a retirement fund. Money was to be paid to widows until they could find some work. Orphans got money until 18 and old enough to take care of themselves.

Other than that i agree with you.

One of the other problems with SS is if a legal alien comes here and want to bring his/her parents, etc. They say that they will provide food and shelter for them. After the kin get here, the kin claims the sponsor will no longer take care of them. You guessed it, we pay.

My friends grandma also receives 450 "pension" a month. Has she worked a DAY of her life in the US? Came from India around 4 years ago. NOPE! She does not even know English. HOW ABOUT THAT?

What type of a STUPID rule or law is this? I want it repealed right now!
Unless they worked for a US corporation overseas, they cannot collect anything here. You have to work 40 quarters (10 years) to qualify for any benefits here.

My mom died 17 years ago. Her medical bills wiped out everything she'd worked for as well as a good chunk of the savings of 4 children. Finally after everything was gone and there was no more to squeeze, during the last months of her life and only after all of her assets were wiped out was she qualified for assistance.

You're only 21 and you're already starting to see what a mess our system is so I'm guessing that as you have more experience with life and realize the real world isn't quite the picture painted by academia, you will at some point in the not-so-distant future need to change your handle.

Canada is nothing like the US. In the 1970's the US and Canada were almost indistinguishable but after the Vietnam war, Canada started veering heavily left. It has worked out OK for Canada but it also has a very small population with very different dynamics than the US. That type of socialism works on small scale with a homogeneous population but not with a much larger and diverse population. In short, a nation the size and complexity of the US can't effectively be micromanaged because there are too many variables to wreck the machine. A smaller government may not be as fair or ideal as it leaves a lot of room for error but it won't break down under it's own weight.

It's our massive liberal social programs and accompanying laws to support them, such as the one that has raised your own ire, that are crippling the nation. While liberal social programs are indeed good and noble in fundamental theory, in reality they almost invariably prove disastrous. Disabled war vets are kicked to the curb while junkies are subsidized, citizens go hungry while foreigners get paid for existing, blacks live in poverty because the welfare system punishes them for getting a job or if the father stays in the home. Our liberal social programs don't just wreak havoc here, they reach across oceans. Africans no longer farm because farmers can't compete with the free food we ship so Africa is in a permanent state of dependency that the Chinese are using to their advantage. Our good natured liberal charity is setting up an entire continent for decades or even centuries of indentured servitude. Sorry to be so long winded but that's just scratching the surface of what it has to do with being liberal.

I was pretty liberal when I was 21 too. But that was 30 years ago.
If we were LIBERAL we would have single payer national health care and your mom and 4 children would not have been wiped out by medical bills because most of them would have been paid.

Are you sure?

Because I see my dads friends parents and friends grandma. They have not worked a SINGLE DAY of their lives in the USA, yet they collect 600-850 a month. It would be a great help if I got even 250 a month.
