WOW! apparently their main prison has collapsed, and the inmates escaped.
Aside from the obvious suffering, too which prayers, and any support possible is due, this will be an important study in what can go wrong, when it all goes wrong.......
I have become somewhat immune to pictures of human tragedy particularly coming out of Haiti, but looking at the Presidential Palace which I personally watched withstand the fire from machine gun and anti-tank rounds yet remained intact, now collapsed upon itself, shook me to my core.
I have to ask, where is the UN response to this? I would think that the UN, with their resources, and with the amount of money this country donates (in the form of "dues") that they would have the ability to respond to natural disasters, that's one of their functions.
The UN doesn't have "resources". It's peacekeepers and relief efforts co-ordinate and use the resources of member nations. There is no UN army ready to move in.
I expect and am hoping for a big response from Canada. Much Canadian aid already goes to Haiti, the Canadian Governor General was born in Haiti (moved to Canada at 10 years old) and there is a big Haitian community in Quebec.
Expect aid also from Cuba and Venezuela - and this could cause political issues.
My thoughts are with everyone who can't get through to relatives & friends.
