BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) - Billionaire Ted Turner's bid to get 74 wild bison from Yellowstone National Park is drawing stiff opposition from those who say the animals are being given up for private profit instead of conservation.
It didn't say why the bison would be slaughtered, unless I completely missed it. I guess if they're slated to be killed for whatever reason, then I applaud him for trying to save them. However I don't think he should be allowed to keep their offspring.
Greetings all: the yellowstone Bison issue is a heated debate that never gets enough publicity...My wife is a Large animal vet and is very knowledgable in this debate..if you would like to read about this issue in depth go to..... Buffalofieldcampaign.org
I've long a go learned to ignore one line responses void of any informed opinion or facts and you should do the same. I respect Turner for his love and respect for the land and the wildlife.
Turner already has amassed more land in America than any other individual -- more than 1.7 million acres in nine states. (The nation's largest private landowner is a company, International Paper, which has 7.3 million acres.) If stitched together, Turner's holdings would be larger than Yosemite, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain and Canyonlands national parks combined -- larger than 5 1/2 Los Angeleses, 12 Chicagos or 20 Atlantas.
"I've got close to $500 million invested in this. That'd be a pretty expensive hobby," says Turner, 61, who was ranked the world's 28th richest person this month by Forbes magazine.
The ranches aren't just open-air bison factories, either. They are a vast canvas on which Turner, an outspoken environmentalist, is painting a radical version of land management in the West.
They are places where rare and endangered species of wildlife, native grasses and even the lowly rattlesnake, coyote and prairie dog merit equal protection. It is a largely unfenced landscape with bison and without cattle, as it was before the arrival of white settlers.

I went to the site. How sad and how stupid and ignorant these ranchers are. I'm sorry that Turner was not successful in his bid.

Yellowstone has a regularly scheduled hunt to cull excess animals. Much of the rancher opposition probably stems from the fact that bison carry brucellosis which can be transmitted to domestic cattle and causes spontaneous abortions.
