MLB was a great man, but unfortunately he's nothing more than a day off for most Americans and ALL government works. What's truley sad is how the hispanic population is stealling the 'civil rights' banner to gain benefits won on the backs of blacks.

Sadly, it is a bogus holiday.

If people REALLY wanted to honor Dr. King they would celebrate his birthday on the actual date. Instead the government uses this as a way to give workers a nice 3 day weekend on the 3rd Monday of January

Yeah, like President's Day in Feb, and Memorial Day in May.

I wish they did go back to actual days vs the Monday stuff.
Seems to dampen the real meaning as it's now looked at as a 3 day weekend.

I agree to a point. The 3 day weekends are nice, esp. in summer (Memorial Day and Labor Day). When I lived in Illinois, Lincoln's birthday (Feb. 12) remained a state holiday. I worked for a health dept. and we got it off for a few years, but then cost-cutting measures were taken and we had to work it.

Except here's the difference...Memorial Day is a day to commemorate ALL fallen soldiers who have served their country - ANY DAY could have been chosen to celebrate it. But Dr. King was born on a certain day - not "the third Monday in January"

We celebrate Jesus's birthday on December 25th (even though we all know the actual date of his birthday is not known) - no matter WHAT day of the week December 25th falls on, THAT is the day we take to celebrate his life. Dr. King's birthday should be the same way, and would be, IF people really wanted to honor him and not just get a longer weekend.

Government employees who get a day off with pay.

The rest of us have to work.

President's Day is meant to celebrate the birthdays of Lincoln (Feb. 12) and Washington (Feb. 22). It is set for the 3rd Mon. in Feb., regardless of the date of that day. Both Lincoln and Washington were also born on specific days.

Lol -- be reassured, poeple who are not "blacks and liberal whites" will never celebrate it. Were you worried they might, behind your back?
