Chinese police shut down the “Mr. Gay China” pageant an hour before it was set to start, saying the organizers didn’t apply for permissions “according to the procedures.” The event was seen as a symbol of China’s newfound acceptance of homosexuality, which was illegal in the country until 1997 and classified as a mental illness until 2001, reports the BBC.
Wow, no responses yet. city-data must be full of social conservatives.
Not sure what's going on here because there are plenty of gay clubs, parades, etc. in major metro areas in China.
I suspect that the shut down had to do with a mixture of corruption (where's my money), homophobia (this is just too Western), and administrators not following the rules.

What's sad is that even some of the gays here are social conservatives.
But, yes, China is a young country with respect to the tolerance of homosexuality (following a Western model, that is), so I'm sure homophobia had something to do with it being shut down. Too much, too soon.

Umm no. But did we really expect anything else? I don't think so. It's China after all.
I don't know if we can apply a Western partisan model to the social climate in China.
I agree, we shouldn't, even if it's convenient to do so.
I'm still trying to figure out why this event would be blocked. I think most Chinese are homophobic, but most also don't care about something like a gay event. What's really going on?
