The civil rights legislation was a Republican idea since Woodrow Wilson started segregation.
JFK refused to sign it twice. Once as a Senator in 57 and again as President in 62.
MLK was a staunch Republican, as was his father.
More Republicans voted for the CRA, by 2/3rds, over that of the view of Democrats.
LBJ knew he would not get the primary win, after pushing and signing the CRA. That is why he didn't even try to run for re-election.
