The only problem I have with the OP is calling some of these people "artists". It really uses the label loosely. When I clicked on the thread, I was expecting a thread that had something to do with art in the true sense of the word. Yes, parents should be open and honest with their kids as to how not to emulate trash and cheapen themselves.
I've never heard that Beyonce song, it's pretty good. I think most celebrities are pretty tame, you only hear of a few that make stupid decisions. I think when the younger celebrities get caught up in bad behavior, that's more damaging than the older celebrities. However, it comes down to the fact that people have their own brains-if they're being influenced by what celebrities do, like kids who try to emulate that Jackas* show, that's their problem. It's like blaming Marilyn Manson for Columbine. No, that's just wrong.
I wonder in what grade the writer of Beyonce's song dropped out of school.
Remedial english, anyone?
A lack of grammar and high degree of inarticulation is a prerequisite for song writing in the popular commercial market. If a parent exposes their kids to a higher quality of music, films and culture they will be instilling better values and taste. Kids will always be influenced to some degree by their peers, but giving them the benefit of more intellectual choices will have a positive affect down the road. Unfortunately, nowadays you have parents that like this type of garbage too.

The image was blurred and the voice distorted, but the words spoken by a young Ohio woman are haunting. She had sent nude pictures of herselfto a boyfriend. When they broke up, he sent them to other high school girls. The girls were harassing her, calling her a **** and a *****. She was miserable and depressed, afraid even to go to school.
Technology can be a dangerous thing today. We all know that if celebrities promote something, teens will follow and emulate it. Celebrities have got to know that their actions (private or not) can have effect on their fans. Even after all that has happened concerning "sexting" Beyonce puts out a song that encourages sending naked photos via cell phones?? Vanessa Hudgens kept her Disney job with no repercussions. What message did Disney send with that?
Personally I think law enforcement should get involved in sexting. You are under age and trafficking porn. Plain and simple. They can trace where it came from. Some time in Juvie or jail will cut this crap out.
Secondly, considering the tragic ending this can have (the girl above) Beyonce and GaGa show no regard for their status and influence.
First off, I have a hard time calling these people "artists". The purpose of art is to attract attention and engage the viewer, and it really isn't that hard to accomplish if you are a hot babe with no clothes on. Not to mention the majority of bimbo singers don't even write their own music. There is a certain amount of skill and talent needed for acting and dancing, but it isn't worth the attention lavished on those people. They go for shock factor... which is why they burn out and disappear so quickly. We get bored fast, and they don't have any tricks besides getting naked to keep us looking their way.
But no, I wouldn't hold them accountable; I hold the people that do the stupid stuff accountable. How stupid do you have to be to wanna emulate the trash you see on TV?
And if we blame them, then we should blame the entertainers of the past for destroying society too. Charles Dickens should be held responsible for poverty, Shakespeare for suicides, Homer for fantasy prone violence, ect ect.
The easiest way to demand that they change their behavior is through the free market. Stop purchasing their products, or products they endorse. If their revenue streams dry up, they will probably try some other marketing approach with different content.
Aww, I love Beyonce and Lady Gaga. That said, their lyrics do promote very unhealthy and dangerous behaviors. I think it is firmly the parent's responsibility to talk to their kids about the dangers of doing what they see on tv or what they hear in songs. Parenting is SO difficult these days. We are constantly bombarded by celebrities and their morally repugnant behavior, and parents can only shield their kids so much.
I've had the talk with my kids about information sharing via the internet, phones, etc. Not only sexting, but posts on websites such as Facebook and Myspace. Colleges and employers routinely google applicants to see what dirt comes up. Always be vigilant and never put anything out their that you wouldn't want your priest, grandmother, teacher, parent to see/read. Nothing is sacred once you hit that send button.
I'm wondering if camera phones are even necessary for teens. maybe the feature should just be dropped off for them.
Beyonce... I'd hate to think young girls would be emulating her behavior, as if their worth revolves around what sexual attention they can attract.
School officials refused Marche Taylor admittance to her senior prom because they felt her custom dress was inappropriate. Apparently, voices got raised and Taylor was escorted from the hotel in handcuffs. My friend Lisa Mumbach said a similar thing happened to her friend in high school, but her friend left before the fuzz were called in. From the Dallas Morning News:
Citizen, I'm wondering where marche's mother is, because this 'dress' didn't come from nowhere. Yes, I do find this disturbing knowing the impressionable minds of the young, but if parents would allow this behavior that reads to me that the parents have no concept of self esteem themselves.
This isn't just this one artist either. Brittany Spears is a tragic figure to me. Paris Hilton and her cohort? Imagine for girls, seeing no other example of successful womanhood around them... just these 'artists' are valued in our culture. What's passing for entertainment... what % of entertainment is over sexualized on tv nowadays? Music? All of it?
