I'm guessing the preference is because private businesses have fewer workplace restrictions in the South, and as a consequence, workers in the South have fewer rights. A government job is more secure. Other opinions?

In U.S., 35% Would Rather Work for Gov’t Than for Business
Goodness, that's an awful lot of government employees. The Fox-style fantasy is that they all live up in DC making $83,000 of Your Tax Dollars for doing nothing. Come to find out they're all down in the South?

Or, the fact that non-whites broke even between private and government jobs could come into play, since the majority of minorities live in the South.

I found it interesting that the more educated you are the more likely you are to want a private sector job as opposed to government.
I thought the economy in the south was doing much better than us commies and socialists in the north?

How was the South hit hardest by the recession? It's really been a nationwide recession. The highest unemployment rates are in Michigan, Nevada, South Carolina, Rhode Island, and California.

Yes, this sounds plausible.

What is it with all these posts about the south, southerners? What are you trying to imply? What's the point?
By the way, I'm a southerner.

It's just a conversation about a region of the country that stands out in a number of ways. I find the South interesting. I'm not attempting to make any nefarious implications.

You should come on down and enjoy some southern hospitality!
I love California, too. Was in Palm Springs over New Year's for a wedding. Beautiful.
Also love New York City.

Aside from the coverage and despite measley pay, the gov't is one of the last bastions of pension. Higher educated people are starting to rethink those gov't jobs. Wait and see the fallout from 401k stories.

Government jobs pay a decent wage. Probably higher than most private sector jobs.

The government benefits package is very good. Again probably better than most private sector jobs.

It is also much harder to get fired from a government job.
Then why were the Senators from South Carolina blocking the nomination of the TSA head who advocated allowing them to unionize?
