I used to be a combat handgun instructor. I do not recommend the shotgun as a home protection firearm.
Yes the jacking of a shell into a pump shotgun is very.......distinctive!
But, they have heavy recoil, and they are long and cumbersome. Given distances of a confrontation in your home, the pellets haven't even left the wad. Now you have a 1oz 3/4" slug that will penetrate standard walls if you miss.
My recommendation has always been a simple 4" barrel 357 magnum revolver. 125 gr JHP. You can practice with 38 specials and if you cannot handle the magnum recoil, just stick with the specials. They are very reliable.
Then---practice, practice, practice.
And make sure everyone in your home (of an appropriate age) knows how to use it if they have to.
We were trained by a special forces guy too . He told us 2 in the chest and 1 in the head if we ever had to shoot, shoot to kill . That extra second gives the intruder time to shoot back if he's not stopped quickly .
So we have dogs that let us know if someones around . Sometimes teens break into houses around here, it would be terrible to kill a kid , we would neer get over it , so we try to make it hard for anyone to put themself in harms way .
Unless you are a very good shot I think using a handgun lets the killers.thieves whatever get CLOSE ENOUGH TO SHOOT YOUR FIRST...For that reason I recommend a "modified" shot gun like I have. A sawed off to the legal limit 20 gauge that has a special load of 3 38 cal round balls in each shell . Its like getting hit with a 38 three times at once in a 12 inch pattern at aprox 12 to 15 feet..Hard to miss and you dont have to take time to aim. Much better than a handgun, unless you are an expert like 007.Am I wrong?
I can tell you because I have called the police in my area, they are pretty quick, usually like 5 minutes however, it might just have been luck. They can't be everywhere at once.
I keep a gun on my bedside table. I have a child, I consider it my responsibility to protect her by any means required. If that means killing someone then that is THEIR choice. I sincerely hope I never have to use it but if it comes down to a choice, I choose my daughters life and my own over someone else.
I just don't see that a good response time by the police is an argument that we don't need firearms.
One time when I was living in New England, I woke up with a man standing over my bed, I had no clothes on, there was a heat wave that summer. If my husband had not been next too me and jumped up and chased him out of our apartment, I don't know what would have happened. There was no time to call the police.
I have a security system, if someone is going to come in, it will give me enough warning to wake me and grab my gun. AND I will grab my gun before I grab the phone.
This is sort of a two parter. What is the average response time from when you dial 911 to the cops showing up? If anyone can come up with true stat, I would appreciate it. I have searched and come up with anywhere between 7-10 minutes. Now we all know what can happen in as little as 2 minutes. Should every responsible household have at least one firearm in the home? I do know that home invasions are becoming more and more popular and IF you can get to a 12-gauge shotgun...not too many sane people will argue with you. Do you keep one in your home and if not, why?

I don't know about other places, but 7-10 minutes is lucky. It can take much longer to get a response to a 911 call around here.
However, I wouldn't bother calling the police, I can take care of the problem myself without resorting to the use of a firearm. I've done so in the past, I will do so in the future.

Kentucky is a stand-your-ground state. I bet when people here call the police about a break-in the cops will either be filling out a death report or a stolen property report not actually encountering the offendor. Cops anywhere will likely arrive when an imminent threat to life has ended when either bloodshed has occured or the crook left with the goods.
where I live now, the response time is about 3 minutes. But where I lived a few months ago, response time was on the average 45-60min, and that is if it was a life threatening emergency, like people shooting in the street.
We keep one handgun here, locked up properly at all times.
