This has been floating around the interpipes for the last couple of days. Is it an ominious sign or typical run-of-the-day IRS type stuff?

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) intends to purchase sixty Remington Model 870 Police RAMAC #24587 12 gauge pump-action shotguns for the Criminal Investigation Division.

Probably because of nut jobs whining they're going to lose all their money to Uncle Sam. I wouldn't put it past some of the goons in this forum to try something Tim McVeigh-esque

Typical IRS stuff and nothing new. The IRS is a law enforcement agency and has been armed throughout its history.
Recall how Al Capone was brought down using IRS tax law?
Reading the description it is quite a sweet setup they have put together on those 870's. Everyone should have at least one.

The IRS agents are real agents, and armed like real agents. It is just replacing current inventory.

Of course, those who are conspiracy minded nuts will ignore those facts.

Criminal Investigation Units a.k.a. the Intelligence Unit of yesteryear...the one's that come busting down your doors...or those of Al Capone.

But seriously, these are the guys that go in sometimes on their own, mostly with the FBI/DEA on narco & RICO raids. They are official duly sworn "federal law enforcement officers" and thus their arming themselves.

Yep, an additional 60 shotguns means the government is taking over.

60 shotguns is a pawltry order given the number of IRS offices across the country. Had they been replacing their entire inventory the order would have been significantly larger.

Shotguns are tools and mechanical devices. From time to time they must either be rebuilt or replaced. The retail cost of that order would come to something in the neighborhood of $30,000. . Government pricing is significantly less than retail.
