So far, I sleep soundly.
"Not a danger unless they can build a large enough army.......to invade the U.S.?" What about 9-11? No invasion forces there; just a murderous act of terrorism. Which is what we can look forward to unless the Taliban and AL Quada are ground into dust. As far as Bin Laden, well, he says he's lookng forward to meeting Allah and reaping his just rewards for his heroic acts against the infidels. I just hope that we can help him acheive his goal very soon.
As far as how come we haven't been able to oust these buggers yet: Vietnam should have taught us that superior firepower doesn't always guarantee victory. The USSR also learned this fact the hard way in Afghanistan, which was pretty much their "Vietnam." Sometimes a well dug-in, indigent, loosely-organized but stealthy enemy can wreak havoc with a larger, more organized, but also less-mobile and thrifty force.
But I don't think Afaghanistan is unwinnable. What we have to do is win hearts and minds. And I'm not talking about any of that b.s. like we tried in Nam; we're not gonna make those people like us, no matter what we do. So we have to make it worth their while to side-up with us. We accomplish this the old-fashioned way: pay them off! Yeah, you heard right. Make no mistake: very few of the Al Quada and Taliban members, or their followers are "true believers." The vast majority of them are members because it provides security and a modicum of status in that poop-hole country. So we simply start handing out $1000 bills to these guys. Watch how quickly they come on over.
BTW: this strategy is not nearly as ham-handed or as far-fetched as it sounds, the CIA has bought-off foreign enemies for many years when they tried to interfere with the implementing of our agendas in their countries.
Money talks: Allah walks.

Al Qaeda is being exaggerated by the administration. They lump in all individuals or groups that have been influenced by global jihadist philosophy. Some of these people were recruited by undercover operations to ferret out sympathizers to the Islamic jihadist movement and to disrupt groups from forming. In some cases, US agents provided them with plans and devices to carry out attacks.

America is becoming too concerned about fighting wars "nicely". It would be a whole different ballgame if this was under Dwight D. Eisenhower's reign ~ I'd bank on it.

As a country, we have nothing to fear. As individuals, some people might. But "you let the terrorists win" if you are afraid of riding planes or subways, driving over dams and bridges, going to large sporting events, drinking municipal water...

Will the country survive this "war on terror?" Of course it will. But some small scant percentage of individuals (civilian and military) will die.

These guys must NEVER be caught. Their capture might end the forever war and the huge revenues of out war profiteers. They must be free so the people remain frightened enough to keep the war funding on the track to oblivion.
