What is with the increased use of Heroin? Is it my imagination or just more public awareness? Is it more available lately?
When I was in elementary school in the early 60's our class did vignettes showing the methods of addiction and results thereof. After all these years is it possible that there are people out there who if offered it just say "Sure. What the heck. It can't be as bad as they say."
After all these years and celebrity deaths there are plenty of willing victims stepping up every day shelling out bucks for something they know can't have a good ending.
Maybe every one of them should be nominated for the Darwin award.

Yes they should. But then, since when is stupid, obviously self-destructive behavior a new thing? Some folks get their jollies playing Russian roulette as well. The 'common sense' gene seems to be absent in some.

Is there some data you're getting this information from?

It's purer now, so they can snort it and it's perceived as "safer" and used more by teenagers and young adults than it used to be. Eventually, of course, most of them will move on to injecting, they just don't realize it yet.

Just had a big bust here in central Jersey in October. Middle-to-upper-middle-class town, 20 of the 21 dealers were white, many of them female, most of them in their 20's.

I just Google "Heroin use increasing" as an exact phrase, and it picked up a whole pile of articles with that phrase referring to cities all over the country.

I was looking for a better study than a google search. A CBS story pointing to increase in one school doesn't really do it for me.

As far as what the story said, the main thing would be that the price has dropped, and that it doesn't have to be shot up anymore.

Heroin is one drug I never tried, I just never saw a reason for trying it. Chances are, if people are dying from it, the increase will be short lived.

I have a brother who died because he used heroin intravenously in his 20's for about a year. Got busted for burglarizing houses and got clean as part of getting probation rather than jail. However, he picked up Hep C and didn't know it for 20 years. He died of liver failure about 5 years after that.

His ex-wife, on the other hand, has been using since she was 18 and has never been clean more than two months at a time. She's 56 and still a junkie. They don't always die as fast as you'd think.

I work in Manhattan, so I pass junkies on the street every day. They usually appear to be kids who left the suburbs for the big city and now sit on the sidewalk with a cup and their hand-lettered signs asking for "bus fare home" or money for "a room for the night". Sometimes they are nodding. A lot of times they have a dog with them for special effect. I saw three different kids downtown on different days with the same dog.

My friend's niece is a heroin addict. Clean right now. She was working for the same pricey escort service that former NY Gov. Spitzer used, but she got fired because she kept nodding over her expensive dinners while out with her "dates".

I know all the best people.

I had just done the quick Google search and that's all that popped up. Probably could get better results of you tried different phrases. Maybe the DEA website has something.

If I have time tomorrow, I might try to search. However, heroin made a comeback in the 90's. Its just being focused on a little more heavily currently. That was a direct result of our efforts in Afghanistan.
