That promise was repudiated in 1933.
In addition, in law, notes are not money.

In fact, Congress has been issuing 'bad checks' since 1933.
It has been able to, because of the underwriting of that debt, first by the States, in 1933, and later, the people, via "voluntary" enrollment into national socialism (FICA).

Over 300 million "Human Resources" are collateral on that unpayable national debt (over 12 trillions). As liable parties, they cannot refuse tender of those worthless notes.

See: hypothecation and re-hypothecation.

you couldn't have said it better, and i put "printing extra money" in quotes because its easily understood, and so i wouldn't butcher what you rightfully explained.

I know what he's trying to convey.

Frankly, I've never understood the miserly character of some people. It doesn't matter if they have modest means or are millionaires several times over, their money is their money.

That's so shortsighted and counterproductive that it hurts.

These misers stand on the shoulders of others. They exist as they are only b/c of the accomplishments of others. So kicking a little bit back to the system to keep it humming along in a humane manner seems like a pretty good idea to me.
I donate to charities often. i am 24 years old and i had a head injury 3 years ago when i didn't have healthcare. i had to pay out of pocket 2000 dollars for a CT scan. i missed a semester of college so i could pay that off. i didn't get help from anyone, government, (my parents made too much money) charities, i wasn't in "need" and i didn't burden my friends with my plight.

yes corporate healthcare sucks!

but i got that scan immediately unlike what happens in other socialized healthcare societies, they stabalized the pressure, and i am alive today to tell you that if we have "universal" healthcare then the government will decide who gets what,(yeah this damn guy is talking about death panels) how can you trust your government when its 12 trillion dollars in debt?

if you have a cousin who has 32,000 dollars in credit card debt, and drives a mercedes that hes worried will get repo'd, would you let him decide where your money goes? do you trust that it will go where you agreed it would go? (donating to united way, red cross, haiti, making it to the right bank accounts and investments) no, its gonna go where he wants it to go (his pocket), no matter what you talked about.

i hold this same reservations with our government. i don't believe that the money they say is going towards healthcare, will actually go into healthcare. yes in some roundabout way it will be spent under healthcare, but it won't be in our favor...

The cost of healthcare keeps going up because of the entitlement programs.
Medicare, Medicaid, Tri-care....

That is why cost are out of control. They want you to think it is all big business insurance. Well insurance needs a little reforming... to be non-profits for one. But it is because the entitlement healthcare programs going broke now, do not pay for the services the patient receives. The cost is made up, by inflating the insured's cost, or go out of business. The government is collapsing the healthcare system too, along with our economy, so they can reboot as a marxist nation, without our founding fathers Constitution in their way.

Frankly, a tax on retail transactions must be predicated on a revenue taxable privilege.

Since 1933, using worthless notes to discharge (not pay) debts has been subject to a tax... in states, by state governments.

But if the worthless FRN collapses, are you certain that the next currency will be a taxable privilege?

And lawful money transactions cannot be taxed as a privilege, either.

Beware the "Fair Tax".

I agree with the OP. We can cover universal healthcare by simply taxing the very things that are unhealthy for us.

We can tax sodas, candy, junk food, and fast food, and impose gas guzzler tax on any new automobile getting less than 25mpg.

If we did this universal healthcare for the long term will be cheaper on the tax payer because on the side we can greatly reduce childhood obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Because people would be less inclined to consume junk food, in essence our average life expectancy will increase and less people will get sick. Think about that.

Believe it or not Canada's been proactive with universal health care and while the OP's not original this is what the Canadians have been doing for years.

Its not Shaniqua from the hood that's milking our system out of billions and holding the country down.
What's funny is nobody debated this or gave this post any consideration, ironically it gets to the heart of the problem. The reality is that there is NO capitalism in our current health care system, it's corporatism at its finest. So how can capitalism be criticized, when we haven't even tried it?!

A good start towards health care reform would be to repeal the laws that subsidies insurance companies. Another issue worth addressing would be legal barriers to entry for smaller insurance companies.

One wonders if they have ever heard of this new, radical concept-

I think we should tax <insert that which I disapprove of>. This is the sum of many of the suggestions here. Sure, some might have drawn out reasoning, but in the end, it is simply taxing out of self interest.
