An amusing discussion with an American bloke here in NZ for a hip replacement operation.
He was telling me that the US has the best health system so I asked the obvious question, why are you having it in NZ.He answered he could not afford health insurance or the prices charged in the US for the operation, but since he was so much against socialism he was having the operation in a private hospital here.
I then pointed out that our socialistic hospital system is for citizens of NZ only.

But, since our private health system is so small we allow them to use our socialistic blood system.
So a question, should we supply our liberal blood to a bloke who is against our type of blood system since we do not charge for it ?
Or should we refuse to supply our good liberal blood to outsiders ?
Is a conservative American a hypocrite in taking charity from another country ?
Should a real conservative pay the wanted price in the USA rather than wander off to a liberal country ?

I left him hoping he would need no blood
Oh, price in NZ for the operation US $16,000 as against $80,000 for him in the states

We have the best overall care, not necessarily the best system.

How can our care be the best when the UN says we are number 37? I agree with you but wonder how we keep getting rated so low by the UN and all the other left leaning organizations.

That UN report rates countries based on a variety of factors, with "access" having a lot of weight. They basically designed the criteria to ensure that any country with a socialized/single payer system would rate above any country that without one.

To summarize, it's complete hogwash.

If our system and price model was transparent and there wasn't as much a barrier of entry in the medical profession, we'd EASILY be #1.

Fair enough, but why would a proud conservative come to a country where we still use hacksaws to get rid of the old hip ?
Or is saving a few dollars more important to conservatives than staying in a conservative area for an operation ?

Did he pay for the operation using his own money? Then it's none of your or our business. That's how we feel about it.

really? 60% of people in Sweden buy supplimental health insurance because their system is so inefficient.

In comparison, our system is outstanding.
