A link talking about the roles of genetics with obesity

CDC Features - Obesity & Genetics
Wrong! Genetics may predispose someone to becoming obese but with proper deit and exercise, they can be healthy. Sure, they will have to struggle more than others and be more disciplined regarding their diet and exercise routine but the overwhelming majority of people are not doomed to becoming fat because of their gentics.

Furthermore, historical data proves that the incidence of obesity and percentage of inidivudals who are obese has increased tremendously in the last 30 years. Genetics are not going to drastically be altered in a matter of 30 years so this proves the reason is lifestyle issues (diet and exercise) Poor diet is the major reason for the obesity epidemic. As both parents work, they are serving quick and easy to prepare meals like fast food, restaurant take-out and prepackaged food which is unhealthy. Poor parenting contributes to this as well as busy parents feel guilty about not spending enough time with their kids so they let them eat whatever they want instead of disciplining them. Furthermore, there are more fast food restaurants and options today than there were in the past. And fast food has gotten cheaper with all of these $1 menu items. Schools also started serving more and more unhealthy meals as it's cheaper and kids like the taste of it.

Decreased activity is also a major cause as schools eliminate their athletic programs and PE classes and as kids engage in more sedentary activities like video games, watching movies and playing on the internet. When I was a kid, we played outside and now kids sit at home on the couch and play video games all day.

From a medical perspective, I've seen people in their mid to late 20's have heart attacks because they are incredibly obese and developed Type II Diabetes at an early age. I never saw that even 15 years ago. I talked to a Urologist and he sees a lot of kids and teenagers without any underlying disorder develop kidney stones that he never saw in the past either. The reason is kids drink a lot more soday today which leads to the formation of stones.

This is an epidemic. The last thing we need to do is blame genetics.

I think Obama offended a lot of obese people (or wannabees) by recommending healthier food habits.

I'm a supporter of the Prez, but this isn't his business.

Get your fat azz up and do something. Fat parents house fat children.

Well like it or not, other peoples actions DO affect me and everyone else. We function as a society and prosper only if we realize we're all in this together.

Default Complete Ignorance on the Right

This thread just goes to show the complete Ignorance displayed on the Right and those who will find anything and everything to bytch about concerning this administration. Every first lady picks up a cause concerning young people.

Nancy Reagan - War on Drugs
Hilary Clinton - Health Care
Mrs. Bush - Education

Now that Michele has chosen nutrition, its a problem. The complete ignorance and hatred. Pathetic

So recommend healthy food and educate people on diet and exercise... don't force people to change by taxes

As a former fat kid that is now no longer fat (and pretty awesome) it's pretty much all of those things. I know you want to get on a soap box about fast food, but acting like it's a non-issue is ignorant.

And lack of parental involvement in making food choices for their children. This is the main thing. Michelle became more involved in her children's food choices after someone commented about her girls getting fat. Parental involvement and the ability to know how to make good choices (education not government force) along with getting children moving again will help correct this problem.

It's not involvement, it's a lack of knowledge. The parents are as clueless as the kids.
